A.P.P.L.E. Server Upgrade Put on Temporary Hold

We have been upgrading our servers here at A.P.P.L.E. in the hope of providing more resources and a faster server for our users.  During our migration yesterday, we hit a snag with services on the primary server being pinged out so we decided to go ahead and do the migration by hand which will take a few days longer than planned.

Stay tuned for more as we go through this upgrade.

Website Categories Changed on A.P.P.L.E. Website

In preparation for a major website overhaul and server upgrade, we have changed all of the categories on the website.   All of the Vintage Apple computing platforms are now under Vintage while the more modern items such as the iPad, Macintosh, iPhone and other items are under Apple Computing.   Also, external companies from Apple which make Apple related products are now under Other Companies.

If you find items which are suddenly orphaned on the website, please let us know as we will be streamlining even further as we prepare to move into the next phase of upgrades to the website.

We will be performing our server migration in February 2012.  We have allocated a 2 week window for the migration but will adjust according to how quickly we manage to get the websites transferred.  During this time you may see minor service interruptions on A.P.P.L.E. hosted websites.  However, the migration is necessary to give us access to the most up to date software systems and also to provide more hard drive storage for our expansion.  These migrations are normally performed in September every other year, however, this upgrade was delayed by the earthquake and tsunami in Japan.

Apple Archives Website Updated

The Apple Archives site has been updated with the January 2012 update.  There are now well over 300 links on the website and we have begun to add more links for the February update.

The Apple Archives is a Vintage Apple specific link library and contains links to Apple-1, Apple II, Apple ///, Apple IIgs and Mac 68K specific websites.  There are currently over 300 websites in the database and growing.  The entire library is maintained by hand and links are added as they are found to be related to the subject material.

A.P.P.L.E. Posts First Year of Australian Apple Review

A.P.P.L.E. has posted the entire first year of The Australian Apple Review.  The Review was produced by Australian business man and media mogul, Garth Powell, from 1984 through 1987.  Although this project has been in the works for a number of years, it is finally culminating with the release of the entire collection over the coming months.

Permission to scan and distribute the magazine was initially acquired in 2003 by A.P.P.L.E., and re-affirmed in 2009 by Andrew Roughan.   Andrew, along with Bill Martens have been scanning issues of the collection since then, with a number of issues having been donated by Terry Allen as well as by the National Library of Australia.   This assistance was acquired by the donation of one issue of the magazine to the National Library in order to help complete their physical collection of the archive.  Since then, all issues were acquired or were available in collections either in scan form or in physical form.

To download the issues of The Australian Apple Review, check out the website at:

Volumes two through four are currently being scanned and should be available early next year.

Virtual Apple ][ Website Updated

by A.P.P.L.E. Staff

The Virtual Apple ][ website has been upgraded to allow emulation on all platforms for their Apple ][ section.  The emulation site which is popular among educators for their games and ease of use in the classroom has long been criticized for their support of only Windows based platforms.

That has all changed thanks to the efforts of Marc Ressl and Nick Westgate.   Using a modified version of Marc’s AppleIIGo emulator, the new Virtual Apple ][ website now runs on any platform which supports Java.

Several features have also been included in the new version including the Mockingboard sound, faster emulator, full sized emulator that allows complete control over the emulator without other items getting in the way.

The only installation this emulator requires is Java which can be downloaded from the Sun Microsystems Java website at http://www.java.org.

Once you have Java installed, you will be up and running by just clicking on one of the over 1400 programs on the site’s menus.

For more information or to play the games, check out the Virtual Apple ][ website at:
