The Applied Engineering ad for a "Ramworks Card".31I love reading Applied Engineering ads. It's so 31much fun to dream about the consumate Apple with 1/enough slots to simultaneously use everyone of 64their cards. I love the way they take subtle shots 31at their competitors. Like when they state that 42their cards will emulate all other manufacturer's 64cards. Just ignore two or three hundred features "on the Applied Engineering card.42Anyway, when I started readn it, 42Ramworks will hold from 64K up to 1 Megabyte of 53extra RAM. Keep in mind that there are two models 53of Ramworks. One holds a maximum of 128K, and the 64other facilitates from 256K up to 1 Megabyte. Both *work with DOS 3.3, PRODOS, to buy your /-megacard, and Apple has not announced, it is 53probably safe to go ahead and get it. Mind you, I 64said probably. In this industry nothing is written $in silicon (ie - high tech stone)./-Instead of having an extra 64K of RAM octs. /-I'll do my best to keep you posted. I would 64imagine, that with the popularity of the megacards, 64if Apple is going to make their own card it will be 1/out for the back-to-school and Christmas sales 1/rush. If you wait until Septembernever know. The Apple card may establish a whole 64different processing standard that would render all 'of the other megacards "has beens". 64Before you decide to buy any Apple peripheral, make 75sure you know the status of any new Apple produnnounce its own megabyte 80 column card. /-It's a good bet that the Applied Engineering 20products will be completely compatable with the 31Apple card. They seem to have an alignment with 64Apple that other manufacturers do not have, but you 42it 53works somewhat like the new Videx enhancement that 31allows you to run Appleworks on the II+. All of -+these cards appear to have some very, very interesting enhancements. 1/There is a rumor floating around that Apple is 64about to a*market. One is manufactured by Checkmate 31Technology, and the other by Legend Industries. 31Incidentaly, Checkmate also manufacturers a card 64for you II+ owners that lets you use Appleworks. I 31know very little about it, but I imagine that ed. I have 53never been disatisfied with anything they make. I 42have two of their CP/M cards, an A/D interface of 64theirs, and several software items that they sell. All excellent. 53There are two other RAM expanders currently on the ,53more complicated than with the IIe, but completely 53serviceable. I have never seen or used a Z-RAM so 53I will necessarily limit my comments to Ramworks. 0.If past experience with Applied Engineering's 31products is of any value ... be assurd Z-Ram, that only comes in 256K and 512K. It /-works as well as Ramworks except for a small 53reduction in processing speed. It interfaces with 0.the main data buss through a socket plug that 53replaces a chip on the IIc mother board. A little nd; and load up the Desktop.53Maybe I should explain what a Ramworks card is for 20those of you who don't know. Ramworks is an 80 64column card for the IIe that replaces your existing 0.80 column card. There is also a IIc version, 64calle4I think it was the easiest installation of a card I 64ever performed. It took no more than 20 minutes to 53read the three pages of installation instructions; 64insert the card; configure the Start-Up and Program 64disks with Super Appleworks Expasion via U.P.S. - two day air - 64C.O.D. Three days later, there it was. Appleworks 64said "367K AVAIL". I don't think I really believed 53it until I loaded in a 250K desktop with 10 of the 2biggest, fattest Appleworks files I had at hand.6ing that ad I couldn't 42believe it. An Appleworks Desktop cradled in one 64megabyte of RAM. Oh joy! Oh rapture! Oh heavenly 0.Kays! I couldn't stand it. I called Applied 53Engineering right then and there and had them fire 0.off a 512K ver and Pascal. /-You can insert the 8-64K RAM chips from your 64original extended 80 column card into your Ramworks 42card. In fact you can use any combination of 64K 64and 256K RAM chips as long as they are in blocks of 318. With 256K RAMS you can have 512K on the main 53board, and to add up to 1 Megabyte you have to get 31a "piggy-back" board from Applied Engineering to hold the other 512K.42Do not be intimidated by all this megabyte talk. 20You can start out with an inexpensivil the latest version right out. Appleworks 53Super Expand is the patching program that modifies 64Appleworks to run with Ramworks, and it is included with Ramworks.0.Next month I will cover the Appleworks set-up 53procedure; quantitative imon number above 3.8. If 53you order Ramworks from them you will get the very 42latest version. Should you order it from another 64vendor you may not. Either way, if you do not have 53a suitable version call Applied Engineering. They 64will mac .,Office System, Flashcalc, The Spread Sheet, 0.Diverse-A-Dos, Diverse-A-Copy, Supercalc, and Magicalc.42After replacing your original 80 column card with 75Ramworks you have to use "Appleworks Super Expand". 53Make sure you have a versims are for Visicalc and Appleworks.64Several other programs have already been written to 64accomodate the extra Ramworks RAM without patches. 31They usually recognize no more than 512K. These 20other programs are the latest versions of Magire using to 1/recognize the extra RAM. This modification is 64commonly called a "Patch". There are presently two 64"Patches" available to modify programs so that they 31will recognize, and use, more than 128K of RAM. 20These two "patch" progra20program it works like the standard, extended 80 64column card. The program recognizes the first 128K 53and uses it. A little trick is necessary when you 31want to use more than 128K. In order to do this 20you have to modify the program you a2everything in one of his demonstrators before you 3buy. The Titan accelerator card works perfectly.64There is a generous three year warranty on Ramworks #and Z-Ram. Very generous indeed.31When you use your new RAM for a regular Apple II accelerator card you are going to have problems. 1/Ramworks does not function properly with Speed 0.Demon. There is a new version of Speed Demon .,coming out that is supposed to correct this 64problem. Your dealer will most likely let you test 4 those disk drives 53offline! Be advised. Ramdrive has a limitation. 64It only works on Z-80 (CP/M) cards that do not have on-board RAM.31There is one other potential problem to look out 0.for with Ramworks. If you have a Speed Demon 42512K, for example, 24% is dedicated to "overhead".64You can also configure your extra RAM as a Ramdrive 53in DOS 3.3, PRODOS, and CP/M. Applied Engineering 53supplies a program called "Ramdrive" to accomplish 64this. Things do fly when you get$less than the Apple Extended card.42If any of you are wondering why you do not have a 31512K Desktop with a 512K Ramworks, it can all be 20explained away with "overhead". Essentially it 42takes a little RAM to service a lot of RAM. With 4 you get 182K; with 512K you get 53367K, and with 1 megabyte you get 800K. Note that 64the 46K figure is 9K less than the regular 55K with 64an Apple Extended 80 column card. On the plus side 64though, the 64K version of Ramworks is about $50.00 $299.00. The 512K version is now $399.00. 20There is also an RGB monitor option that can be added at any time.53When you have 64K of RAM on the Ramworks card your 64Appleworks Desktop is 46K; with 128K the Desktop is 1/91K; with 256Ke, low RAM, 53Ramworks and add RAM to it later. The cost of RAM /-chips, especially the 256K chips, is falling 31dramatically. This is reflected in recent price 31reductions for the Ramworks. Originally $399.00 42for a 256K Ramworks, it is nowprovements in processing 42speed; and the handling of very, very, very large 31files. An 8 year old, you will recall, .,is a short human being who can preceive and 42brazenly reveal the naked truth. If you happened 0.to mis OPEN-APPLE RAM-RAM-RAM!!! Part II-+Last month I started talking about Applied 53Engineering's Ramworks card, and I mentioned how I 31was put in my place by a RAM-Totin' 8 year old. 64Ramworks, you QSTUVWXYZ[\]^_`abcdefg - SHOWIN' OFF with ApPLEWOrks" by "DJ" Lane- CHUCKLE-CHUCKLE $O=====|====|====|====|====|====|====|====|====|====|====|====|====|====|====|===,"ns just that. In this case 20it was done with the "Add Files to the Desktop" .,command. There was a 40% savings in time with the Slow-Boot option.42b. Load File is also through the "Add Files to /-the Desktop" command. In this case it was a .,14K word processor file. There was a 40% $savings with the Slow-Boot option.0.c. Help Screen (?) means an Open-Apple "?" 0.command. You can see that with the Slow-Boot .,option the Help Screens are instantaneous. 20With the Fastning, ,*only informing. Never before has so much 53unprecedented, raw processing power been unleashed 64from an Apple II. These Mega-RAM cards are just as 64important as a language in ROM, slots, and the disk 3drive were when they became part a large file. One of 31the most powerful functions of Ramworks is being 53able to work with megafiles. This is another case 1/where overhead rears its head. You cannot get something for nothing.20Do not misunderstand me. I am not complaited 64a 150K data base file. When I went into the middle 53of the it and tried several edit functions, things 53had slowed down dramatically. The rationalization 42here is simple. That's the price you pay for the 53benefits of maintaining such0know you are going to have a full Desktop, boot 3your Fast-Boot set, and save yourself 85 seconds.-+Being able to create, load, save, and edit 42megafiles is a most exciting proposition, but the 53consequences hold out a few perils too. I creas a limitation in the Slow-Boot option that /-you should be aware of. As you fill up your 0.Desktop with megafiles you will overwrite the 42Appleworks program in Ramworks RAM, and you loose 64the speed benefits of the Slow-Boot option. If you 2ons to disk the tedium of keyboard 53entry has been rendered more palatable. I've been 31using the Slow boot option for two months, and I 53can assure you, I never, ever, want to go back )to a 55K Desktop in the Fast Boot mode.53There ihaving to go 1/to the disk, facilitates an immense savings in time.31Granted, most of our time is spent typing at the 31keyboard, and it is very, very time consumming. 64Thanks to Ramworks removal of those perpetual, time 4robbing diversiion will cause Appleworks to run up to 20 times 64faster. This may be so. If you have several very 64large files on the Desktop the Ramworks RAM greatly 31accelerates Open-Apple "Q" file changes. Having 53the files in RAM all at once, and not e I would be way ahead. To 1/correct this problem I spent a couple of extra /-minutes and configured a set of Start-up and 0.Program disks for both the Slow and Fast-Boot configurations.0.Applied Engineering claims that the Slow-Boot 64optbooted and loaded 0.one 14K file, I would only save 10 seconds of 20loading time with the Slow-Boot configuration. 20Overall I would loose more than a minute. Nine 64times out of ten I would load, save, and edit many, 64many files. In this casmake up (for the extra 85 seconds of boot time.53Occasionally I need to boot Appleworks and quickly 64access a single file. When I have to do this, that 64extra 85 seconds seems like an eternity. Using the 53benchmark times above, if I only you want to print on. This saved 55%.64As you can see from the results it takes 85 seconds 31longer to boot the Slow-Boot option. If you are 53going to save any time with the Slow-Boot you must 42perform enough of the other operations to illed.31d. Save File is obviously the reverse of Load -File, and the Slow-Boot option saved 12%.1/e. Start Print is the time from the initial .,Open-Apple "P" command until the disk drive /-stops running after you select which printer *-Boot option it takes 4 seconds to .,call up the screen. In all fairness to the *(Fast-Boot option this 4 seconds is only -+expended the first time you call up a help &$screen. All subsequent screens are .instantaneous, unless the Desktop is fof the Apple II.53Incidentally, you can throw away the standard file 64size limits. You know. No more than 2250 lines in 31a word processor document, and no more than 1350 42records in a data base, and no more than 999 rows 53in a spread sheet. With "Appleworks Super Expand" 1only your available RAM limits your file sizes.64I did run into one potential file limit problem. I 42have a data base file with 4552 records in it. I 31tried to add 35 files with the "Open-Apple Copy" 20c1. You can also leave me an E-Mail note on the 1Big Apple, or corner me at one of the meetings. "fixes" 53for them. Box 6460, Hollywood, FL 63308opics, or a question about Appleworks that might 53be the basis for an article I would very much like /-to hear them. I am especially interested in 64"Bugs". If you have had any, or have heard of any, 64let me know about them. I'll try to dig uptimes faster, the hard drive 53maybe 10 .... 10 or 20 for the Slow Boot option .. 53Nobody is going to believe this! If the WOZ would 5just come back things would be totally Ohhh! Kay!!!53If any of you have any suggestions for SHOWIN' OFF 42tled with the 53"Appleworks Super Expand", Slow Boot option should 31make Appleworks a veritable, tour-de-force. I 64betcha with all that installed our "kays" would run 42circles around the "best of 'em". Lets see. The 42accelerator is three 42an accelerator card, a hard drive, and Ramworks. 20There's a rumor going around that Mr. Lisner is 31working furiously on a new version of Appleworks 53(2.0) that has pull down menus, color, and other, 53MAC-like, mouse tricks. All this coupakes a long time to load a file that occupies 53two or three completely full disks. I still can't 42believe it. Files that are three or four or five *.. hundred .. thousand .. bytes long?!?!53Can you imagine what Appleworks would be like with mention it almost casually. I 42have saved a 200K file to two simultaneous disks, 20and loaded it back to the desktop. The process 64functions perfectly. I am thankful that Appleworks 42uses Prodos instead of Dos 3.3. Even with Prodos 42it tunction is one of the 1/most powerful aspects of Ramworks, and Applied 42Engineering does not mention it in their ads. An 75amazing, albeit untypical, display of "humbleness". 1/Even the "save" instructions on the Appleworks 31Super Expand disk multi-disk file. The 20programmer who wrote Appleworks Super Expand is /-definately a clever person. If you use a 15 ,*character file name it is truncated at 13 3characters before the numeric appendage is added.31This multiple disk "save" fo save the file. The 42second disk lists the file with a ".2" appendage, "and the third ".3", and so on. 64I was curious about what would happen if I choose a 53file name that was a full, 15 allowable characters 42long, and used it to save aplace that disk with 0.another blank, formatted disk with the SAME .,pathname. If that disk fills up you put in 2another, and another, until the file is saved. 53When you catalog the disks the first one will list 0.the file name you used ta disk that 42will only hold 120K? The solution is obvious ... 53multiple disks. After the Open-Apple "S" command, 1/the file is saved on the data disk until it is /-full. You then get an "Insert Another Disk" 64message which is your cue to reommand and I got a file limit warning. I have 42added more than 35 records, one at a time, and it 5is taking them; however, it may eventually fill-up.53What do you do if you create a single 250K file on 53the Desktop and you want to save it to #O=====|====|====|====|====|====|====|====|====|====|====|====|====|====|====|===8"mount of &($return postage stamps inside before (you send it.('(%From time to time I will get updates %(#from Jim and let you know how many (files he is currently (disseminating. &($Right now there are about 150 files (on the eight disk the plucking. Due to an apparent shortage of =;AppleWorks compatible third party software development and 64no confirmed advanced AppleWorks to help me, I have ?=attempted to partly rectify the situation by developing some by Roger Vancil?=As any experienced AppleWorker will acknowledge, there are a ;9lot of potentially useful functions and features missing ?=from this otherwise fine program. I was especially appalled 64at the lack of some very common and uses and enhancements and that Apple will have a :8very low-cost upgrade policy for present AppleWorkers. <:(Portions of the preceeding two paragraphs represent info from July 1985 "A+" magazine.)+ MATH UTILITIES FOR APPLEWORKS SPREADSHEET AppleWorks for use with the Mouse (for the IIc ?=and enhanced IIe) that might be available by the end of this >computer software.
