They opened their biggest and brightest store yet, right smack dab in the middle of Grand Central Station. Long, the center piece of the New York existence, Grand Central serves more than a million people every day. by Rick Sutcliffe Technology News and Views Since 1983 Something Old, Something New December 2011 The Spy recently acquired a few surplus G5s, and in the process of setting them up to be useful file servers and replacements for even older G4s at his home and church, (re)-discovered some interesting things about memory, disk drives, and both hardware and software compatibilities. First is that all disk drives are not manufactured equal, quite apart from the Thailand flooding that means many…
Apple today released a couple of updates including iTunes 10.5.1. This update is supposed to include the new service from Apple called iTunes Match, their matching service which allows imported CDs to also be stored in iCloud. by Rick SutcliffeNovember 2011 Presciencewas not foreseen by the Spy when he titled last month’s column, but said monicker now seems faintly evocative of a sad prophecy. The iCEO has not merely stepped down, he’s left us altogether. Steve Jobs’ legacy sees us all materially wealthier, for he had a unique talent for putting his finger on the pulse of the market two or three years down the road, then inventing the product to create the market his mind’s eye…
The folks who produce the iPhone App Camera+ (http://www.campl.us) have put a very nice comparison of the different iPhone cameras online. The comparison which starts with the original iPhone and ends with the iPhone 4S and two professional Canon Cameras, shows the distinct differences of each camera. The iPhone 4S does very well in the comparison showing some of the crispness that the new camera is supposed to have. You can check out the comparison at http://campl.us/posts/iPhone-Camera-Comparison

With the release of iOS 5 this week by Apple, most of the iPhone users in the world were faced with the possibility of getting the update fairly immediately. Unfortunately, my iPad 2 did not see the update until yesterday. With a bit of trepidation, I went ahead and took the plunge. Yes, both feet in and updated. While my iPhone 3gS had updated to iOS 5 smoothly, the download for the iPad 2 seemed to drag on forever in…

While many people have been patiently waiting for the announcement of a public funeral for Steve Jobs, the likelihood of one being scheduled is looking pretty dim. A report in the wall street journal said that the funeral was being held Friday and was a private affair. Obviously, this was done to prevent such idiocy as the WBC protests or to prevent masses of people from descending upon the funeral procession. However, this also would be befitting the man who…
Apple, Inc. began taking pre-orders for their latest incarnation of the iPhone, the iPhone 4S. While many speculated that the pre-ordering was done because of the hohum attitude about the new device, sales of the new phone have been more than satisfying to the companies selling the device. A few early morning issues with server availability caused some frustration among buyers, yet AT&T reported that their systems had taken over 200,000 orders for the new phone in the first 12…

Notes making the rounds in the blogs today are making light of the fact that Siri, the new iPhone 4S personal assistant’s name is similar sounding to the Japanese word Shiri. Shiri, or Oshiri in Japanese is rear or bottom and certainly not a word I would believe Apple would want associated with their latest product. A similar incident happened when the iPad was introduced in Japan. AiPad is an adult diaper brand in Japan and this fact apparently escaped…
Apple announced in a memo just a bit ago that former CEO and Apple Chairman of the Board, Steve Jobs, has died of Cancer at age 56. While Apple did not specify a cause of death in their memo, Jobs was diagnosed with Pancreatic cancer in 2004. He had surgery then, apparently clearing out all of the cancerous cells at the time. However, he was once again diagnosed with Cancer in 2009 and had a liver transplant that year. He…
