Seattle, Washington – 28 July 2024 – Apple Pugetsound Program Library Exchange (A.P.P.L.E.) is proud to announce a new, ‘extra special’ 3rd Edition of The WOZPAK Special Edition: Steve Wozniak’s Apple-1 & Apple II Computers. The WOZPAK was the first official technical resource for the Apple II computer, with original material provided directly by Steve Wozniak and Apple Computer president Mike Scott to the A.P.P.L.E. User Group.

2024 Update: a mere 11 years after we released the “Special Edition,” we happened upon a rare and official version of The WOZPAK – with approximately 30 additional pages of original material from Steve Wozniak and Apple. After careful cleanup and restoration, along with improved organization, we have released this 3rd edition – expanded to 390 pages (as compared to about 350 pages in the 1st). The primary new additions are an “Assembler” article from Woz (15 pages, mostly handwritten), and “Keyboard Modification” (7 pages, several hand-drawn diagrams).

The WOZPAK Special Edition combines all of the unique materials in the WOZPAK and WOZPAK II, putting them into a single volume containing extensively restored original handwritten notes, printouts and drawings from Steve Wozniak and other contributors.
R&R Auctions has announced the release of a pre-production Apple II Motherboard (REV1) for auction on their site as part of their “Steve Jobs and the Apple Computer Revolution” auctions lot. The Motherboard auction started at $500 but is expected to draw bids of over $5,000.

It is currently unknown what the actual source of the board is, however, internal speculation is that this is one of the rate Apple II boards which were part of the famed Tony Diaz collection which sadly has been scattered in dozens of directions.

The early microcomputer was designed by Steve Wozniak and based on the 6502 8-bit processor. In fine condition.

The early success of the Apple-1 in 1976 paved the way for the introduction of the Apple II in the spring of 1977. In Apple’s 1980 IPO prospectus, the company described its progress: ‘In April 1977 the Company introduced the Apple II computer mainframe which was similar to the Apple I but incorporated additional circuitry and a keyboard, and was packaged in a plastic housing.’ In other words, the Apple II built upon the Apple-1 to become an even more capable, more consumer-ready machine.

Between 1977 and 1980, on the sales of the Apple II and its peripherals, accessories, and software, Apple Computer’s yearly revenue grew from $774,000 to $118 million, making it one of the great growth stories of Silicon Valley.

Steve Jobs would have been 66 today, Wednesday, February 24th, 2021. Born in 1955, Steve Jobs passed away at the age of 56 after a long battle with Pancreatic Cancer.

The co-founder of Apple, Inc. and the primary reason for the company’s resurgence in the late 1990’s and 2000’s was known for his dedicated to detail, quiet philanthropy, his dedication to pursuing the ultimate in computing integration as well as a sharp tongue and ability to take those of us who were Apple fans along with him for the ride.

Steve was a master salesman and it was once said about him that he could sell rocks to the hungry as he was so good at it. Over the years through many keynote speeches, everyone came to expect his inevitable “One More Thing” at the end of each speech which in many cases was more earth shattering and profoundly world changing than the rest of the keynote speech

We here at Apple Pugetsound Program Library Exchange have long been the beneficiary of his and Steve Wozniak’s visions of the computing world and have been at many of the events where Jobs spoke at. Always entertaining and enlightening, Steve was one who knew how to. turn a good jab into a better one but also someone who knew when to turn to one of his people, throw the prompter at them and say to them, “Fix it!”

Even, current Apple, Inc. CEO Tim Cook took the time to recognize Steve on his birthday and his accomplishments, tweeting:

Several people lately have been looking at the replica realm with great interest and I found myself looking back through the files at what people had done already. One of the mainstays in the Apple II replica real was Mike Willegal, the former curator of the the Apple-1 Registry.

One of the wonderful pages he had done was the “Information on Building your own Rev 0 Replica”, a page dedicated to the idea that the first Apple II available on the market was a machine that was within reach for all hobbyists.

Originally designed and built in 1975 to 1977 by Apple, Inc. co-founder, Steve Wozniak, the Apple II was a giant leap forward for the personal computer. The Rev 0 Apple II has a number of interesting items leaps in technology that were unheard of at the time. Capability of having 48K of memory on board was one of the first things that every 8 bit computer strived for at the time.

Wozniak’s Cassette tape read process was also a 1200 baud process which at the time was more than four times the speed that of any other computer tape process. This allowed the Apple II to read programs faster and for users to get from nothing to a full blown game in a matter of minutes. The expandability of the Apple II was also exploited thanks in great part to Apple and Wozniak disclosing the entire structure of the machine, making it a truly open platform upon which many companies were born. This concept is lost on most modern computer companies including the great Apple, Inc.

But that machine is within reach of all hobbyists now if you are willing to take the time to print the boards with provided Gerber files, gather the components and do the work putting the machine together. As Mike Willegal said on his website, “There are over 2500 holes on this board, most of which have the leg of a component in it. This project cannot be done in one evening.”

If the above describes you, then check out Mike’s webpage on building the Rev. 0 at:
http://www.willegal.net/appleii/appleii-kit.htm

Steven Paul Jobs, Co-Founder and visionary of Apple would have been 64 years old today. Jobs, along with Steve Wozniak, creator of the Apple-1 and Apple II computers, and Ron Wayne, the oft maligned and forgotten third partner started the company that most of us have come to know and whose products we all now use on a daily basis.

While much has been written about Steve over the years both in the positive and the negative, yours truly has been there for two of the most earth shattering moments over the years in relation to the effect he had on Apple and the world.

The first was 2002 and the introduction of the iMac and the iPod. After witnessing the decline and absolute decimation of Apple Computer, Inc., the introduction of the iMac and the iPod were not only great events but they changed the way the masses looked at computing, music, movies, and other aspects of the consumer computer market.

These introductions that took place at the 2002 MacWorld Expo in Tokyo and were well received by the public. Of course Apple at the time had the biggest market share in Tokyo of any place in the world. With nearly 20% market share at the time, nearly 198,000 people saw these items over the three days of the event. However, it was Steve’s words at the Keynote that sent shock waves around the globe.

The second event was WWDC 2007 in San Francisco. The iPhone was introduced and all of the world went wow and then a loud thud was heard when Steve proclaimed that developers did not need an SDK for the new iPhone. Of course, in February the following year, that all changed, developers got their iPhone SDK and the rest is history.

Subsequent introductions and the iPad were much of the same technology and never quite reached the fervor of those two introductions but of course, the world was changed.

And thus we here at Apple Pugetsound Program Library Exchange wish to say to Steve Jobs, Happy Birthday!

Tickets went on sale for the Comicon dinner event with Steve Wozniak this week. The event scheduled as part of the Tokyo version of ComiCon is set for 4 December 2017 and is being held at The Prince Park Tower Convention Center in Tokyo. While most of the tickets for the event are much more reasonable (in the $100-200 range), the tickets for the 300 person limited event for Steve Woznaik are selling for a whopping $715 (¥80,000 JPY) showing both the reach and the draw of Mr. Wozniak. This however, includes the event, dinner, photo op and meet and greet with the Apple computer creator.

While the legions of fans around the world have been drawn to these events over the years, the draw in Japan has always been much higher where Apple,Inc. has consistently held a nearly 20% market share even during the darkest of years for the company. The very active Japanese community also tends to be willing to pay a premium for the limited time with the person they consider to be the God of the computer revolution.

As of late, Steve Wozniak has become a very familiar face in Japan, appearing in a number of television commercials and on billboards around the country. This newfound popularity has been driving many companies to actively pursue the Apple, Inc. co-founder especially in the wake of Steve Jobs’ death.

Information about the event can be found on the Comicon website at:
http://tokyocomiccon.jp/wozniak/

Tickets can be purchased from Ticket Pia, a local Japanese events ticket seller at:

This month on Open Apple we sit down with David Schroeder, author of classic Apple II games such as Crisis Mountain, Dino Eggs, and Short Circuit. We get into a lot of the technical details of Crisis Mountain and Dino Eggs, so you might pick up some tips for your own Apple II projects! David also has great memories of the economic and design realities of the time, where everyone was scrambling to figure out what a computer game was, and what players really wanted. Game developers are still fighting that battle, but at least we have a definition of “video game” now.

We’re sharing David’s games in the show notes below, with his permission! In exchange, he asks that you patronize, share and support Dino Eggs: Rebirth.

After that we jam through some quick news, bask in the fallout (see what I did there?) of the GEOS episode, and we get down and dirty with rodents. Do you have the GS with the bigger Em Bees? Trust us, you want the bigger Em Bees.

You might notice that we’re continuing to tighten up the show. Let us know how you feel about this trend in our show length! Do you like the shorter episodes? Miss the epic three hour monsters? Email us at feedback (at) open-apple (dot) net. We have social media too, but we can never remember which ones.

In 1975, Paul Terrell, owner of The Byte Shop, famously bought 50 Apple-1’s from Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs. Of course, they had to build them first and with no money, Steve Jobs convinced companies to provide parts based on a 30 days payment plan using the promissory note from Paul Terrell.

Most folks look at that event as the real event that started Apple. However, it was Paul who convinced the Apple guys to make the computer a real computer by providing a case. Thus was born the Apple II.

Now 40 years later, the opening of the new Apple campus is an event which will change the way Apple does business and Paul sent out a message wanting to take part in it. This is perhaps the ultimate full circle of life for Apple. Paul posted on Facebook this morning the following message:

Posted by Paul Terrell on Wednesday, August 19, 2015

NextShark has put together a very nice expose of the events along with Paul Terrell at:

The Apple-1 belonged to John Anderson who was the Founder of the Cincinnati AppleSiders User Group who kept the machine enclosed in a glass case for a number of years. According to the Lot Details on the Bonhams website, it comes with a Keyboard of the same era as well as a Sanyo VM 4204 Monitor as well as a custom power supply in a wooden box. Also, this Apple-1 has no apparent modifications made to the board and only one chip was replaced.

Howard Cantin was the man behind the printed circuit boards for many of the early atari machines as well as the Apple01 computer. Recently, Mike Willegal, creator of the Apple-1 Mimeo, sat down with Howard in a telephone interview to talk about what when into those days and his relationships with the heads of what was then Apple Computer as well as how things went with Nolan Bushnell of Atari

As for the proverbial story about how Atari refused the Atari Breakout board that Steve Wozniak built, he says “engineers at Atari couldn’t understand the design. Because they couldn’t understand it, Atari ended up not using it.”

Ron Wayne is probably the least well known Apple, Inc. Co-Founder of the three men who created the now behemoth company. He had a 10% stake in the young company at it’s founding, however, he left the company, selling his stake for a total of $2300. The media has reported that he lost potentially billions of dollars in his leaving, however, he does not see it that way. According to Ron, “I didn’t lose out on billions of dollars. That’s a long stretch between 1976 and 2012. Apple went through a lot of hard times and many thought Apple would simply go out of business at various times in its maturity. I perhaps lost tens of millions of dollars.”

The writing offers some good insight into what was going through his head at the time and the reality of the world in which Apple was created. While the company is worth Billions today, there was a time where the company was nearly sold and several more times where it was nearly bankrupt.

His recent interview with the BBC on BBC Radio exposes the ultimate question he has for Singapore:

“Where are the creative people? Where are the great artists? Where are the great musicians? Where are the great writers?”

Although education and infrastructure play a major role in the foundation of Singaporean society, The whole concept that one should not thing for oneself is completely foreign to the free thinking and creative Woz. “You have to inspire creativity” Woz said, also saying that it was companies like Apple, Inc. which embodied this concept.
