Brian is an A.P.P.L.E. Board member and Managing Editor of Call-A.P.P.L.E.. He is a producer of books, films, games, and events, as well as an Apple consultant, historian and archivist. Brian designed, edited, and co-produced dozens of books including:  "Nibble Viewpoints: Business Insights From The Computing Revolution," "Cyber Jack: The Adventures of Robert Clardy and Synergistic Software," "Synergistic Software: The Early Games," "Graphically Speaking: Enhanced Edition," "What’s Where in the Apple: Enhanced Edition," and "The WOZPAK Special Edition: Steve Wozniak’s Apple-1 & Apple II Computers."  Brian also co-produced the retro iOS game "Structris." Brian was an extra in Joss Whedon’s movie “Serenity,” leading him to being a producer/director for the documentary film “Done The Impossible: The Fans’ Tale of Firefly & Serenity.” He brought some of the Firefly cast aboard his Browncoat Cruise convention and recruited several of the Firefly cast to appear in a film for charity. Brian speaks about his adventures at conventions around the country.

The long-running, Apple-centric Call-A.P.P.L.E. Magazine has returned.  Started in 1978 by Val J. Golding, the magazine has a long history with publication from 1978-1990 and 2002-2010. Mockingboard released from Ultimate Micro

The famous Mockingboard sound card for the Apple II has been cloned and is available from Ultimate Micro.  Besides being a 100% compatible clone and featuring stereo music and a 6-voice sound synthesizer, the board has been updated with a 3.5mm audio jack and a computer speaker input.

OS X Vulnerable to DLL Hijacking

According to a detailed article by Patrick Wardle, OS X with Gatekeeper is vulnerable to attack from applications loading dynamic link libraries (DLLs) that don’t specify a path name. “The operating system looks for the DLL file in a number of well-defined directories. TurboTax Printing Uploads Data to Intuit

      Mac users wanting to save a PDF of their TurboTax return or print to file, are forced to upload their data to Intuit via a silent connection.  The Mac TurboTax license says, “You may save your return as a PDF file and understand it may be processed on Intuit servers, not as part of the Software.” In a February 19 Wall Street Journal article, Intuit blames Apple:  According to Julie Miller, an Intuit spokeswoman, TurboTax made the…

Apple’s Network Time Security Update

A critical Network Time Protocol issue has been patched by Apple, and is available for OS 10.8 through 10.10.1 via the Mac App Store.  While most Apple updates are user option installable, this particular update is being pushed out by Apple automatically in order to prevent machines from being hi-jacked by hackers.  If you have not seen a notification on your screen, you can install it from the App Store.

Making Apple II Software Now Easier with Xcode

Jeremy Rand has released Apple2BuildPipeline to simplify and facilitate making Apple II software on OS X with Xcode. Apple Partially Patches Bash Vulnerability

Apple released a patch for the bash UNIX shell to address two serious security vulnerabilities known as ‘shell shock.’  The updates don’t appear to be in Software Update and can be manually installed for OS 10.7, 10.8, and 10.9. Apple Watch Marks Beginning of New Road
