Best Buy Squashes iPad for Employees Rumor

Nest buy squashed the The initial rumor meant that Best Buy would have been purchasing nearly 200,000 units just for their employees.  This glut of machines would have likely meant very few machines for actual retail customers. According to the article in the Wall Street Journal (http://blogs.wsj.com/digits/2011/03/07/best-buy-considers-tablets-for-salespeople/?mod=WSJBlog&mod=), they are looking into other alternatives and other tablets but it is highly unlikely now that they will ever give iPads to all their employees.

Faster Web Access: A simple method

This is largely a repeat of an article in an earlier issue of the magazine. It works across all forms of *NIX (including OS X) and in a limited way Windows as well. Most professional *NIX people don’t recommend it. The reasons escape me at the moment. One thought some network analysts had a couple of years ago as to the slow loading of web pages was due to mis-configured or slow ad servers. Visiting some pages with numerous popups…

FAA Approves iPad as paper map replacement

The FAA has approved the iPad as a replacement for paper maps in the cockpits of commercial aircraft.  Traditionally, airline pilots have carried reams of the maps of the airports they were flying into and out of, in a specialized flight suitcase.  Now they will really only need their iPad complete with the appropriate maps application such as the one from Jeppesen. According to an article in Bloomberg (http://bloom.bg/fFwLkH), Delta Airlines is one of the major players in the push…

iPod Wrist Watch — It is here but is it usable?

Over the past few months, I have been watching and waiting for someone to take an iPod (yes the small 6th gen Nano) and turn it into a usable wristwatch.  Many of my cohorts commented on the same idea in January and February with the first articles appearing about it this past 2 weeks or so.  No it seems that everyone is jumping on the band wagon including us. Having had a computer on my wrist since the early 1990’s…

Terminal Tips: History and Auto-completion

These tips can be used with the OS X terminal, iTerm, and most Linux shells. I have also verified the history works with the Windows “DOS Prompt”. It’s nice when things work out in a consistent cross-platform way. 😉 The history feature is useful when a programmer wishes to perform similar commands over again. In the past the process used to be more complex. Now it’s as simple as using the up arrow key. The down arrow key works to…

FTA Rolls Back ActiveGS Plugin

The ActiveGS Plugin has been rolled back to version 3.3.201 due to a bug which was discovered to be causing the Safari version of the plugin not to work.  Work is ongoing and a fix is expected soon.  In the interim, if the plugin is not working in your browser when you visit the Virtual Apple ][ website, we recommend uninstalling the plugin and re-visiting to re-install the older version of the plugin. If your broswer is working fine with…

Best Buy to give Employees iPad2?

There is a story running in a Forbes Blog (http://blogs.forbes.com/elizabethwoyke/2011/03/04/is-best-buy-planning-to-give-ipads-to-all-its-sales-associates/) by Elizabeth Woyke that Best Buy is planning on giving all of it’s 180,000 retail employees an iPad to help them become better sales people. If proved true, it could be a huge gamble for the retailer which is struggling as of late, but it could also have a huge payoff since Best Buy is an Apple sales partner. Best Buy may be counting on their employees becoming better educated…

Conan O’Brien pokes fun at iPad2 Launch

Conan O’Brien has been known for his ability to have the latest and greatest in Apple gadgets and to poke fun at them at the same time.   While his iPhone skit was quite funny a while back, his new iPad2 commercial is absolutely brilliant in the manner it parodies the launch.   Stating “Apple is getting a bit cocky” in his monologue, he then turns to the following commercial to take the joke home.

Akalabeth – A blast from the past

Many eons ago, or maybe it just seems like that, a man named Lord British (A.K.A. Richard Garriott) released a software package to the world which forever changed the manner in which computers and games were thought of. That game from so long ago (actually 1978) was Akalabeth, the predecessor to the now famous Ultima series of adventure role playing games. Now, when it seemed safe to emerge from the darkness safe from the threat of attack by an Orc,…

Opera web browser for ages 17+?

This morning I was dismayed to find that the Opera web browser download was causing a warning when downloading the browser from the Apple website (http://www.apple.com).  Restricted — Ages 17+.  I didn’t want to believe it but it’s true folks and quite frankly it seemed totally inappropriate. Visiting the Apple App Store even as I write this shows the warning is still there. The warning made me wonder at first they decided this particular application needs to be restricted? Pornographic…

In obvious preparation for next weeks release of the iPad2, Apple has released the iOS 4.3 Gold Master to its developers.  With the new technologies implemented into the new iPad2, Apple is hedging its bets that one week will be enough for most developers to catch up on the Apps and get the new Apps into the App Store prior to the release of the iPad. There are sure to be a ton of new apps utilizing the cameras and…

Modern equivalents for Mac 68K software

Everyone has probably had one or two programs over the years that they had during the early days of Macintosh that they wished there was a modern equivalent to.  While most of us only dream of those retro packagers, one early mac user, Scott Baret wrote an interesting post on just such a list of items he wanted over at the 68K Macintosh Liberation Army Website about his list of items complete with his equivalent finds in the computing world…
