Ample 0.255 Update Introduces Atari ST Support

Ample, the MAME Emulator Apple centric interface, has just received a significant update with version 0.255, bringing forth a slew of exciting features and enhancements. The most notable addition is the long-awaited support for the Atari ST system, expanding the emulator’s capabilities and offering users the opportunity to delve into the rich library of Atari ST games and applications.

It’s important to note that the Atari ST compatibility in Ample is still a work in progress. As MAME itself cautions users with the message, “THIS SYSTEM DOESN’T WORK,” it’s advisable to approach the Atari ST support with reasonable expectations. However, despite some potential limitations, the developers have diligently worked to ensure that certain aspects of Atari ST functionality are available within the emulator.

In the world of Atari, the term “disk image” often refers to a visual representation of a disk rather than a functional digital copy. This subtle distinction may surprise some users transitioning from other platforms, but it is an important characteristic of the Atari ecosystem.

To make the most of the latest Ample update, users must have macOS 10.13 or later installed on their machines. This system requirement ensures compatibility and optimal performance for the emulator’s new features and enhancements.

Moreover, the fact that the Ample update incorporates the Atari ST emulation that is built into the MAME build does not override the development issues in MAME. This integration is a significant step forward but it is crucial to bear in mind the ongoing level of development of the Atari ST support within the MAME emulator. Users may encounter certain limitations or compatibility issues.

Additionally, Ample 0.255 introduces experimental emulation support for Uthernet II and WIZnet W5100, two popular networking devices. Extensive testing has been conducted to ensure compatibility with networking solutions such as Marinetti, IP65, and A2osX. The developers are actively working to refine the code and clean it up, with the ultimate goal of integrating these enhancements into the main MAME project.
