AfterDark Fans Rejoice! AfterDark on MacOS 9.2.2

For those of you who are fans of the flying toasters of yesteryear, there is now reason to celebrate! Matthew Pierce (CybernetixZero) has modified the AfterDark program and the modules to run smoothly on MacOS 9.2.2.

This release is a celebration of everything After Dark!

For many years I’ve been on a mission to see After Dark running stable on Mac OS 9.2.2.

Some time ago, a user by the name of Daxeria released a patched version of the After Dark 4.0 engine. I want to give a huge shout out to them, their release inspired me to learn about Macintosh programming and to research/debug what was causing After Dark to crash on boot. We both came to the same conclusion; the custom decompressor has a bug which causes memory corruption on Mac OS 9.1 and later.

This lead me to create a utility to recursively decompress resources in all files related to After Dark. Once I had proven my utility worked, I then installed every edition of After Dark (thank you Macintosh Repository) and ran my utility.

What you see before you is the ultimate installation of After Dark ready for Mac OS 9.2.2.

I would love to hear any feedback from the passionate Classic Mac community, thank you for doing what you do!

This is my way of giving back. Feel free to hit me up on Macintosh Garden (@CybernetixZero) or on Reddit (u/CybernetixZero).

Happy #MARCHintosh 2025! Cheers and enjoy!

The AfterDark program will require a Mac with a 68K PPC architecture and of course, MacOS 9.2.2. You can download the entire archive here: https://macintoshgarden.org/apps/after-dark-494-collection?ref=callapple
