Description
Caverns is a game based on a Tim Hartnell game called Caverns of Terror from an early 80s programming book. In the game, you traverse a network of ten caverns, each of which has twenty tunnels. Now and again, you will come to a set of between two and five branching tunnels. One of them is a steep decline you can fall down, reducing your health.
If you encounter a monster such as a gremlin, you can choose to either fight it or run away. Sometimes the monster can stop you, leaving you with no option but to fight it. Monsters get stronger the further you move through the cavern. You gain points for defeating a creature. There are treasure chests strewn throughout the cavern, they can contain treasure (which adds to your score), food, a curse (which diminishes your health) or they can be completely empty. Gnomes also live in the cavern, when you encounter one, they will guide you to the next tunnel.
After any of the above encounters, you can choose whether you want to walk to the next tunnel or run, which carries the risk of you cutting yourself on a stalactite. Completing a cavern gives you a point bonus unless you complete the final cavern.
