KEGS v1.30: A Slew of Advancements in Apple IIgs Emulation

A new version of KEGS, the Apple IIgs emulator, has been unleashed upon us by Kent Dickey, the curator and developer behind KEGS. He has released KEGS version 1.30 with a slew of enhancements that take your Apple IIgs retro computing experience to the next level.

For those unfamiliar with KEGS, it’s a versatile Apple IIgs emulator, originally created for Windows, the latest versions will run on Mac, Windows, and Linux based machines. Whether you’re a seasoned Apple IIgs user or a newcomer eager to explore the charm of vintage computing, KEGS offers a remarkable platform upon which to run your Apple II series software.

What’s New in KEGS v1.30?

Here’s a quick rundown of the key changes and improvements that Kent Dickey has introduced in KEGS v1.30:

  • Proper Emulation of Language Card Soft Switches: KEGS v1.30 now delivers accurate emulation of the $C080-$C08F language card soft switches. This enhancement ensures a more authentic Apple IIgs experience, particularly for software that relies on these soft switches.
  • Improved INTC8ROM Emulation: With this update, KEGS has significantly improved its INTC8ROM emulation. As a result, the a2audit tool now successfully passes, especially when using Apple //e ROMs. This refinement enhances the overall compatibility of KEGS with a wider range of Apple II software.
  • Fix for SCC RR2B Register Emulation: Users of Colin Leroy-Mira’s telnet.system will appreciate this fix. KEGS v1.30 addresses SCC RR2B register emulation issues, ensuring a smoother experience when using telnet-based applications.
  • SCC Remote IP Mode Enhancement: KEGS now handles the SCC remote IP mode more gracefully. In cases where the remote side terminates the connection due to idleness, KEGS will automatically restart the connection. This improvement is particularly beneficial for those connecting to printers and ensures a more reliable experience.
  • Bank Switching Refinement: Previously, certain bank switching operations were not emulated correctly in KEGS, leading to compatibility issues with specific software like the AppleLink Terminal application. KEGS v1.30 rectifies this by correctly applying RAMRD/RAMWRT/ST80COL/etc. to bank $E0 in addition to bank $00.
