So… Having confessed to being a serial procrastinator, I’m curious: What are your biggest rabbit holes—the things you find yourself doing instead of real work. Mine include (but aren’t limited to): guitars, social media, Logic Pro or GarageBand, and that damn Strike Skilz bowling game I keep playing on my iDevices. I’d love to know what your rabbit holes are… so I can help you figure out the best way to avoid them when you’re working. That’s all for now. Thanks…
In a recent excursion into the A.P.P.L.E. storage boxes in Seattle, Brian Wiser discoverd a number of issues of our original Mac-A.P.P.L.E. magazine. The magazine which was published from 1986 to 1988 was A.P.P.L.E.’s attempt to differentiate the Mac from the Apple II computers, carry original content specifically attuned to the Mac computers. A total of 15 issues were found in the archives and today, we are happy to announce that the first scan of those Mac-A.P.P.L.E. issues, May 1986…
Paul Hagstrom has posted a number of the ST.MAC magazines on his blog. Known as Softtalk Mac officially or Saint Mac unofficially, the magazine was the natural progression for the SoftTalk enterprise which ran from 1980 to 1984. The first issue of ST.MAC was released in February 1984 but was to run only until August of that year due in part to the shut down of the Softtalk enterprise. Now enjoy a bit of that era as we face the…
Apple, Inc. celebrated the 30th anniversary of the introduction of the Macintosh this week. January 24th, 1984, Steve jobs showed the world his new machine complete with graphical user interface. The machine initially envisioned by The like of Jef Raskin and Steve Jobs had come to a fruition and Apple introduced it in a manner which has never been forgotten. Few can forget the image of Steve Jobs up on stage two days after the commercial aired during the Superbowl,…
Today’s Mac GUI Vault update brings enhanced file catalogs to over 70% of the 27,000 files currently in the Vault archive; that’s almost 19,000 files. These file catalogs are in the search database too, so you can use them to find the programs that you’re looking for. Some files, such as BinHex and BinSCII, will often have a description of the program in them; this description has also been copied out and is searchable. The following file formats are cataloged:…
If you haven’t updated your iTunes to the latest version yet, you might want to think about doing it relatively soon. A new proof of concept shows that a malicious playlist could execute any code it wants on your Mac. At this point, the vulnerability is only a proof of concept and no real world application of the issue has been seen yet. For more on the vulnerability, you can check out SC Magazine posting on the topic: http://www.scmagazine.com/itunes-vulnerability-may-enable-remote-code-execution/article/246207/ The…
Jeff Dunham, the comedian and ventriloquist has been exposed as an avid Apple Computer collector. While his first hobby is collecting vintage automobiles, he also has a very extensive collection of older Macintosh and Apple computers from the 1980’s and 1990’s. His collection is currently numbered at 40 units, including the very first 1984 Macintosh. You can check out his collection in a photo expose done by USA today at: http://mediagallery.usatoday.com/Comedian+Jeff+Dunham+collects+cars+and+Apple+computers/G3448?csp=ipmpg
Paula Routly recently interviewed early Apple Inc. employee Jerry Mancock. Jerry was Apple Computer Inc. Employee 6 or 7, depending on who you ask and he gave a very detailed overview of early life at Apple, about working on the Apple ][, Disk ][ and eventually the Macintosh, as well as working with Steve Jobs. The original creator of the Apple ][ case was originally very skeptical of Steve Jobs and asked for payment up front. He didn’t get it…
Apple and the BSD folks have included two of the four editors as part of the base install packages. The first goes by two names and is accessed via the terminal (Applications –> Utilities –> Terminal). They are either pico or nano (note the lowercase). These are almost as basic as one can get and still refer to them as full screen editors. The other editor included by Apple is Textedit. This is entirely accessed by the GUI. It has…
