Apple iBooks DRM Hacked

A posting on Mobileread.com is suggesting that Version 3.3 of Requiem by the hacker “Brahms” is capable of removing Apple’s DRM from iTunes and iBooks.  While the software has been capable of iTunes DRM removal for some time, this is the first time that it can also crack the iBooks format as well.

This type of hack does not bode well for Apple or those authors who are trying to make money from the Apple Book Store, as users would be able to crack the content and put it out on the internet for free viewing.  However, it is highly likely that a new DRM system will be pushed out in the next update of iTunes and iBooks, iBooks Author in order to block the current hack.

Code to Disk Tool for the Apple ][ Now Available

Egan Ford, the curator of the Apple ][ Game Server and the Apple ][ Disk Server, has come up with a new application which writes games directly to a disk allowing them to be played, without DOS or ProDOS on the Apple ][.  According to his posting on Comp.sys.apple2 usenet group, "I just posted c2d (code to disk) to http://asciiexpress.net/files.  I included the source with OS/X and Windows binaries.  c2d will take a single binary (with or without 4-byte DOS header) or a text monitor listing and create a bootable diskette (dsk) image."

This tool makes the Apple ][ game server files even more useful allowing users to create a fast booting disk or disk image for emulators.

usage:  c2d [-vh?] c2d [-m]   input[.mon],[load_address] output.dsk

-h|? this help
-m jump to monitor after booting
-v print version number and exit

input without a .mon extension is assumed to be a binary with a 4 byte header. If the header is missing then you must append ,load_address to the binary input filename, e.g. filename,800.  The load address will be read as hex. input with a .mon extension expected input format:

0800: A2 FF 9A 20 8C 02 20 4F
0808: 03 4C 00 FF 20 9E 02 A9

Examples:

c2d hello hello.dsk
c2d hello.mon hello.dsk
c2d hello,800 hello.dsk
c2d -m test,300 test.dsk

A sample session using the c2d tool:

$ c2d air_cars,6000 air.dsk

Reading air_cars, type BINARY, start: $6000, length: 8192

Number of sectors:    32
Sector page range:    $60 – $7F
After boot, jump to:  $6000

Writing air_cars to T:01/S:00 – T:02/S:15 on air.dsk

$ c2d moon.patrol,801 moon.dsk

Reading moon.patrol, type BINARY, start: $0801, length: 18460

Number of sectors:    73
Sector page range:    $08 – $50
After boot, jump to:  $0801

Writing moon.patrol to T:01/S:00 – T:05/S:08 on moon.dsk

Grid Runner for iPhone — Retro goodness lives again

A game originally found on Commodore 64 and Vic 20 computers in the 1980′s is now available for the iPhone.   Grid Runner has been re-formatted by the original author of the game, Llamasoft Ltd., to the 1980′s coin-operated arcade style of play.  Produced with high quality graphics of the iPhone, the game has a glossy arcade look to it and really could be in any arcade of the current generation.  The game itself has two modes, novice and expert.  The game will remind a lot of users of the 1980′s Centipede arcade game, but Grid Runner is much more than that.

The fire control is on all the time, making the only thing you need to do is move your finger around the screen to control the ship.  With levels and effects that get harder and more interesting as they go by, it is definitely an interesting play.

While our expectations were that you would have arcade style controls with such a game that would make Gridrunner the perfect game to play with the iCade, we soon found that with only one control, might as well skip the idea of the iCade and just focus on playing the game.  In spite of the single dimension of play, the challenge of navigating through the game will keep you going for hours (If you make it that far!)

For those purists who wish to play the Commodore 64 or Vic 20 style game, just turn the iPad sideways to landscape mode.   The familiar look of the original game appears on the screen, making this game a full two in one game.

Also, one added benefit to the arcase style game is that after level 5, every 4 levels, the game saves you best outing as far as number of remaining ships, making it easy to restart from a reasonable level rather than having to begin back at the beginning, although that too is an option.

The game is a $0.99 cent download from the iTunes App Store at:

Throttled iPhone User Wins Small Claims Case Against AT&T

An iPhone user in Southern California, won their lawsuit filed against AT&T in small claims court for the throttling of “Unlimited” plan usage.   The user, sued AT&T after being throttled each month after using 1.5 to 2gb of data.  However, AT&T’s users with the 3GB plan receive no such throttling in spite of the fact that the plans cost about the same.

The user, Matt Spaccarelli, won a judgement of $850 USD in the small claims court case after Judge Russell Nadel found in his favor.   With seventeen million “Unlimited” plan users, AT&T could be in for a good number of cases in the future as more users take on the giant telecom company.

Civilization V having Issues updating in Mac App Store

Civilization V Campaign Edition, one of Aspyr‘s most popular new games for the Macintosh is now having issues updating in the Mac App Store.  At this point, the issues have so far only affected those users running the Mac OS X Lion operating system.

Aspyr Technical Support released a work around for the issue:

We have a POTENTIAL workaround for getting the latest Civilization V patch from the App Store.

While this workaround works for most users, we have seen that some users are not able to reinstall the game after following the steps. Apple knows about this problem and has told us they are trying to fix it

·    You will need to delete the Civilization V Campaign Edition Application from your
Applications folder.
·    Empty the trash bin located on the dock.
·    You will NOT need to delete anything else, this includes the Civilization V
Campaign Edition folder within Application Support or the
com.aspyr.civ5campaign.plist.
·    Launch the App Store and select the purchases tab.
·    Click on the install button located to the right of the Civilization V Campaign
Edition Icon.
We are sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused. Apple is aware of the issue and is working to resolve the problem.
Some users are reporting that this work around still does not work, with the file downloading but not appearing in the folder.

Flashback Trojan Using Multi-Pronged Attack

A Mac Trojan which seems to build on lessons learned, is now attacking users in three ways. The Flashback.G Trojan targets two holed in Java, self installing if the latest version of Java is not installed. If neither of the holes is available, it tries a fake signed by “Apple, Inc.” certificate to install. The Trojan puts a number of files in /Users/Shared with the file extension .so. If you find these files on your machine, it is likely that your machine is infected.

You can check on this by starting the Terminal program and doing the following commands:

  • cd /Users/Shared
  • ls -al

Look for any dot (.) file that has an extension of .so.  The file also will put a .plist file at:

~/.MACOSX/environment.plist

And log files from the malware are stored at:

~/Library/Logs/vmLog

To delete the Trojan, go to ~/Library/Caches and search for a Java Applet.

  • ls -al *.jar
  • (also ls -al *.class)
  • rm (name_of_file).(.jar or .class)

The Trojan is not only able to perform the system checks but it also can self update, and seems to be targeting Mac OS 10.6 primarily which would be more likely to have the Java holes necessary for automatic installation.

One interesting aspect of the Trojan is that it will not install on machines that have any of the major Anti-Virus applications installed. This is in an attempt to keep the Trojan from being detected.

You can read more about this particular Trojan on the Integro Blog at:
