WWDC 2012 Sells out in 90 minutes

The 2012 rendition of the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference or WWDC sold out in less than 90 minutes this morning.  The conference which will be held from June 11th to June 15 as Muscone Center in San Francisco is an annual rite of passage for many developers.  Last year the conference sold out in twelve hours, however with the demand for information about Apple products growing at a similar rate as the demand for Apple products, the developers are all clamoring to get tickets to these Apple sponsored events.

Most developers this year will be left out though as Apple generally only accepts about 5500-6000 developers and has anywhere between 800 and 1000 Apple staff and engineers present for face to face questions about Apple’s products and their development issues.  The only way to get into the conference at this point is to garner one of the scholarships for students that Apple gives out to 150 deserving students.

Twitter Posts Chart of the Apple iPad Event Tweets

Every time Apple holds an event, twitter seems to struggle under the load of the tweets.  This time, twitter is showing us what the load of the tweets looks like during the event.  The chart shows that the announcement of the New iPad comes in a just under 10,000 tweets per minute while the big spikes hit at 10:33 am PST with the announcement of the LTE 4G and then the biggest spike at 10:41am PST with the announcment of the pricing.  The next time twitter spiked was at 11:21am PST with the announcement that the iPad 2 would cost just $399 for the 16gb model and then at 11:25 am PST with the close of the event.

One surprise is that there is barely a blip reached with the intro of the new Apple TV just about 10:12 am.  That part of the whole announcement was as if Apple didnt want anyone really to notice that it was actually being announced.

Apple Store Now Offline in Anticpation of New Products

The Apple Store has been taken offline in anticipation of updates from this morning’s Apple Event in San Francisco.  The event in which the highly anticipated iPad 3 or iPadHD as some are calling it may also feature Apple’s latest rendition of the Apple TV unit which allows users to watch iTunes Store movies on their television.   While no hard details are out yet, there are a ton of rumors swirling around with everything from a complete new television to a major upgrade to the products.

The Apple store going offline is now normal practice prior to the Apple events and usually, it comes back online just after the products are announced.

The Apple store is at:

Many in Media Fooled by Fake Phil Schiller Account

Many in the media this morning were fooled by the Fake Phil Schiller account saying “Apple won’t be streaming the live event tomorrow”.  While it is a forgone conclusion that this would not happen anyways primarily due to Apple’s recent policy concerning such events, it is surprising that mainstream media outlets including Cult of Mac, 9to5Mac, ValueWalk and AppleInsider would be fooled by a twitter account that only had 37 tweets.

Fake Account:

https://twitter.com/#!/pschiiler/status/177142087869935616

Real Account:

https://twitter.com/#!/pschiller

Update:  Just after we went to press with this article, the Cult of Mac , 9to5Mac and AppleInsider have deleted their article completely other than the links and tweets going to the removed link, and for their part, Twitter deleted the Fake Phil Schiller account as well.   Thus none of the links are working other than the real  account.  ValueWalk still had their posting up with a photo of the original posting from the fake account.

Unfortunately, the story propagated to many of the automatic feeds as well as news sources like Tech Investor news so it is likely to be floating around as a headline for the remainder of the day, but the content is not available any longer.

Invitations for Apple’s iPad 3 Event Sent Out — March 7 It Is!

Invitations for the next release of the iPad went out to the media today, with Apple proclaiming “We have something you really have to see. And touch.” The event for the iPad 3 release is scheduled to take place on March 7, 2012 at 10:00am PST at the Yerba Buena Center in San Francisco. The event has been talked about greatly throughout the media rumor circles for the past several weeks with this event being the worst kept secret of Apple’s history.

Are there two Apple Events on the schedule now?

Mac お宝(otakara) is now saying that there are two events scheduled by Apple.  The first event which they were saying was for Apple’s iPad 3 announcement apparently has been pushed back to March.  The first event supposedly in February is yet unknown.  Mac お宝 is saying that the event would be “a Strange Event”.   Speculation by some of the posters on the site and others says that the February event might be scheduled to coincide with Steve Jobs birthday which is February 24th.

While it would be highly unusual for Apple to hold two events so closely together, they may schedule an event to celebrate the life of Steve Jobs but given all of the rumors about the iPad 3, it is possible that they will use the event to announce another game changer like the iBooks Author.  Our own in-house people are saying they could use the event to announce a possible update to the Apple TV and the long rumored Siri Controled OLED TV.  If there is a March event, they would likely use that time to announce the iPad 3 and our speculation is that it would coincide with the 11 March earthquake and tsunami anniversary and would likely be held in Tokyo.

What’s Really Coming on the 19th of January 2012 from Apple

On January 19th, 2012, Apple Inc. is scheduled to have an education related announcement in the heart of New York City. While many in the world are speculating that apple is trying to “destroy the textbook industry”, We suspect that they are just following up on several lines of thought.

First, Texas was the first in the nation to embrace to totally digital textbook idea. It currently saves the state 2 billion USD per year in text book costs. If Apple is really going to “destroy the textbook industry”, then it will have to have the help of three places. The Apple suppliers and factories.  Apple needs to deliver the iPad3 immediately and it must have markedly superior capabilities to the current models with upgrades in nearly everything.  The cameras, the memory, the UI, and of course the power of the machines.  Second is the states.  Apple also needs the states to buy the iPads  and buy into the idea that digital text books are better than the paper ones. Thirdly, the textbook manufacturers.  Apple is  also going to have to get the current textbook publishing companies to go completely to digital copies of books and abandon the idea of printing books on paper (please tell me where we have heard this idea before). Of course, while we are at it,  why not destroy the entire physical book industry.  Could this not the end of the entire hold it in your hand type book industry? (Again, tell me where I have heard this before)

What little do we know that as of 19 January 2012, everything in our libraries will become controlled by computer and by the amount of memory in the computing device. If a glitch or hardware failure hits them, they are gone! Great idea!  That way the book companies can charge consumers for another copy of a book they have already paid for.  Thankfully, Apple has resolved this blight in the system for us by already incorporating that into the cost of the initial copy.  But this will get people buying books from Apple and now it will be very easy for  every book we ever order can be checked out by someone in the Ministry of Truth.

Second, the ebook publishing format currently used by Apple with their iBook store is epub2. epub2 is outdated and definitely not up to snuff with the current level of ideas in the digital publishing arena. They must implement epub3 and do it not only quickly but also they must support it with their announcement. If they fail to implement the new standards, they will not only not get the support from the publishing industry that they need, but they also will not get the teachers or the schools or states. Apple’s 1980′s education initiative put apples in many schools across the country but there were definitely haves and have-nots in that game.I suspect that the Trash-80 vs Apple wars came out of this idea of haves and have-nots.  Unless Apple is going to subsidize an iPad for every student in the US, we will likely have this same flame ware between the Android Tablet vs Apple iPad users  of this generation. This subsidization might deplete 10 percent of their 85 Billion Dollar war chest of cash.  Perhaps the Ministry of Plenty will forgive them for being so generous and the Ministry of Peace will thank them for ending the perpetual wars between the haves and have-nots.

Thirdly, Apple must make it easier to publish to the Apple book store. Our suggestion that iPublish is the new publishing product that they will introduce on the 19th is not far fetched.  It would definitely get the ball rolling to the point where everyone and their brother in the publishing industry would suddenly publish for Apple and no one else.  Should such an app not appear on the goodie bag list, Apple could suffer for a long time in the publishing arena and it would likely make any push for the education initiative mute point. Up until now, they have always supported the larger publishers when introducing the latest products and failed miserably at getting the smaller mom-and-pop shop types on board.  Apple must get them and the end consumer to the same playing field as those big guys. This failure to provide a clear path to the promised land is the reason that many of the smaller publishing companies wind up paying through the nose to some big publishing company just to reach that playing field. This is definitely the one area they need to improve upon if they really want to get ahead of the game.

Will Apple announce the iPad3? Not likely, but they may have a pre-anouncement type announcement which they will announce the initiative and then say when the iPad3 comes out, it will be available, similar to Steve Jobs famous “You don’t need an SDK” statement at WWDC 2007. We all know that changed in a hurry. With all of the parts rumors going around, it is possible that we may see the iPad3 mid year 2012.

Thus the announcement will be “We are starting an Education Initiative, we are digitizing books (already been done), and the book companies are on board (already been done).” No hardware and quite possibly, no software which would make this the biggest non-event type event Apple ever had. Oh Wait, there is one more thing….I was dreaming.

The real announcement will be “iPad3 with 256gb memory in 2 months, iPublish in 2 months, and all current major text books on iPad3, including those used by major universities in time for school year 2012-2013 to start”.  One more thing…Break out the check books!

Beijing Apple Store Pelted with Eggs as iPhone is Delayed

The Beijing Apple store has had a major debacle in its opening of sales of the new iPhone 4S there.  The store was supposed to open at 7:00 am but as the time reached 7:15, the crowds of people who had amassed waiting for the sales to begin, began chanting and hurling eggs at the store.  Swat teams were called in to control the crowd and the sale of the iPhone there halted.

In most other cities, tickets were given out for a maximum of two iPhones per person and the sales went smoothly.

Apple to Hold Education Event in New York Next Week

As predicted here by our staff, Apple has scheduled an education related event at the Guggenheim Museum in New York City.  The event which will be held at 10:00 am on the 19th of January will outline Apple’s Education initiative.  While many have said this event will feature the iPad 3 prominently, we are expecting it to take more of the Standford and MITx education initiatives in hand and show how those initiatives will integrate with iTunes.

As stated in our article on the 5th of January, we expect a publishing system to be introduced that will go hand in hand with the iBooks application and book store as well.  Obviously, Apple Inc. is being tight lipped about the schedule of announcements thus we will have to wait until the 19th to find out the full extent of what they have in mind for that morning.
