Earlier this month, Matthew Clark posted a long held mystery of Eamon #80 – Search For The Key by Eamon’s creator, Donald Brown. Apparently, Dr. William Trent had a unique way of winning the game, however, he never disclosed the secret. In follow up emails with Dr. Trent, he no longer seems to remember what that solution was and thus Matthew Clark has put our a call to the entire Eamon community looking for those who might have a clue…
For those of use who used Apple computers in the early 1980’s, there have been two constants in the gaming world. The first was Oregon Trail which every school age child of that generation still recognizes today. The other, while not as recognizable, was just as influential in the Text Based Interactive Fiction realm. That would be Eamon, the adventure system created in 1980 by Donald Brown. Over the years since his initial version of the Beginners Cave appeared in…
During the past week, I have been re-visiting a number of the original Apple II archives which we produced here at A.P.P.L.E. during my testing with John Morris’ Applesauce. In the bunches of floppies, I found one disk labeled mysteriously “March Special E-Base Program“. Initially, I thought it might be an old database program that never came to light, however, to my surprise, it was the original Eamon version 2.1 Base Program which was modified by John Nelson and Robert…

With over 255 adventures written for Eamon, it is also likely the most prolific adventuring system as well. Eamon was designed in 1980 by Donald Brown and released in Recreational Computing Magazine as a public domain system. While the first dozen or so adventures were written by Donald Brown himself, most of the following 200 plus adventures have been written by over 50…

The original Eamon Beginners Cave has been updated to display the users stats on the page at all times. The original modification was implemented in 1985 and never released. So I went back this week and fixed the mod and am now releasing the New Beginners Cave for public beta. While the program is nearly 100% ready to go, there may still a few glitches along the way. If you find any issues with the program let me know. You…

The Eamon Adventurers Guild Online, curated by Matthew Clark, is looking for writers who have a penchant for writing. Eamon has long been the standard for Apple ][ interactive fiction ever since Donald Brown created it in 1979. Published in 1980 in a number of magazines, complete with Software Developers Kit and a number of adventures, the system soon became very popular among Interactive Fiction writers of the 1980’s. Currently, the Eamon Adventures Guild Online library contains over 255 adventures,…
Robert Plamondon How the EAMON Adventure System Works. COMPUTERIZED adventure games have been surrounded by an aura of mystery that has nothing to do with their story lines. Simply stated, the mystery is this: no one knows how they work. Like most mysteries, adventure programs are pretty straightforward once the hidden parts are revealed. To bring these secrets to light, let’s look at the EAMON adventure system by Donald Brown, which is a set of BASIC programs for the APPLE…
