Apple Struggling in China to Keep Pace

Speculation that Apple may be losing out to it’s Chinese competitors in mainland China is coming to the forefront.  While Apple products are popular the glove over, in China, there is a possibility that infrastructure to handle the iPhone and iPads may be the major limiting factor in China. According to a report in Reuters by Lee Chyen Yee, “A tie up with another telecoms service provider would help catapult Apple sales. But the biggest by far, China Mobile Ltd…

The iCade started out as an April Fools joke, but was soon realized by the popular gadget company ThinkGeek.  The iCade — Ipad Arcade Cabinet — harkens back to the old school  type arcade style and enhances any game experience, especially those old 1980’s games.   Many manufacaturers have looked for the iCade as a standard for their game play and while the price for the cabinet is normally $99.99, ThinkGeek is running a special for Black Friday sales with a…

Updating the iPad 2 to iOS 5

With the release of iOS 5 this week by Apple, most of the iPhone users in the world were faced with the possibility of getting the update fairly immediately.  Unfortunately, my iPad 2 did not see the update until yesterday.   With a bit of trepidation, I went ahead and took the plunge.  Yes, both feet in and updated. While my iPhone 3gS had updated to iOS 5 smoothly, the download for the iPad 2 seemed to drag on forever in…

The Editor Bytes Back – Reasons to update to a iPhone 4S

Well, we finally broke down and upgraded our iPhone 3gS and there are many impressive things about iOS 5 on the iPhone 3gS.  Yet, there is something missing.  We couldn’t quite place our hand on it but we figured we would break it down piece by piece. While the introduction to iCloud was nice and simple, allowing us at the end to simply not use it if we so desired, it was sort of, shall we say, commanding in the…

iPhone5 Announcement Hours Away

With less than 10 hours to go until the iPhone5 announcement, it is funny to read the hubub on many of the main steam media sites.   It seems that many in the main stream, including the Wall Street Journal want the iPhone 5 announcement to be a failure.   Videos like “Is the iPhone loosing its cool factor” and “Little Buzz Ahead of Apple’s iPhone Event” being the most popular on the site seems that they are pushing that negative agenda….

Three E-Book readers compared

The three readers are Adobe Digital Editions from Adobe, Stanza from http://www.lexcycle.com/, and Skim from http://skim-app.sourceforge.net. Each of the three have their strong points and weak points. Adobe is fairly powerful and fast, but lack many of the whiz bang features of other readers. They concentrate mostly on PDF documents (which is no surprise). Apart from formatting, there really isn’t much there which can’t be found in Preview (built into OS X). It has the look of a Windows program ported…

LCARS for iPad

I volunteer as a system administrator at a place which installs software for an “educational charity” on Fridays. Yesterday the repair guy (who is a big Star Trek fan) called me over to his table. He showed me a video on Youtube about an Android app which turned a tablet into a “Tricorder”. I thought that was pretty cool. A quick search on Google for “lcars ipad” turned up this link to a couple of videos from last year. The…

Best Buy Squashes iPad for Employees Rumor

Nest buy squashed the The initial rumor meant that Best Buy would have been purchasing nearly 200,000 units just for their employees.  This glut of machines would have likely meant very few machines for actual retail customers. According to the article in the Wall Street Journal (http://blogs.wsj.com/digits/2011/03/07/best-buy-considers-tablets-for-salespeople/?mod=WSJBlog&mod=), they are looking into other alternatives and other tablets but it is highly unlikely now that they will ever give iPads to all their employees.

FAA Approves iPad as paper map replacement

The FAA has approved the iPad as a replacement for paper maps in the cockpits of commercial aircraft.  Traditionally, airline pilots have carried reams of the maps of the airports they were flying into and out of, in a specialized flight suitcase.  Now they will really only need their iPad complete with the appropriate maps application such as the one from Jeppesen. According to an article in Bloomberg (http://bloom.bg/fFwLkH), Delta Airlines is one of the major players in the push…
