Quill for Retro Macintosh platforms Released

From Anders Muskens:

There’s a new app for vintage Macs called Quill, and I wanted to share what I’ve been working on!

I’m Anders Muskens, its developer. I got excited about building new software for ancient Macs because I still want to use mine for real work. They’re lovely machines to write on—but trusting an old hard drive with an afternoon’s writing, then getting it onto a modern computer, can be another matter.

So I built Quill: a native word processor for System 7, Mac OS 8 and 9, and PowerPC Mac OS X, running on machines from the Macintosh Plus onwards.

It supports Markdown, formatted text, pictures, footnotes, spell checking, and printing. Cloud syncing and version history keep copies of your writing beyond the old machine, while Quill Drive syncs files between old and modern Macs—including resource forks.

The idea is simple: enjoy writing on the old Mac you love, and carry on with that work on a modern device. Companion apps for modern macOS, iPhone, and iPad are coming soon, too.

You can already download the Mac apps and use them locally for free, without an account. I’m also accepting beta signups to test the cloud features and make sure that side is really robust before the public launch.

Quill is a closed-source commercial project, with free local use and paid cloud plans planned for release.

I’d love to hear which Mac you’d try it on—and what you’d want to write with it!
