The Northern Spy – Something Old, Something New

by Rick Sutcliffe Technology News and Views Since 1983 Something Old, Something New December 2011 The Spy recently acquired a few surplus G5s, and in the process of setting them up to be useful file servers and replacements for even older G4s at his home and church, (re)-discovered some interesting things about memory, disk drives, and both hardware and software compatibilities. First is that all disk drives are not manufactured equal, quite apart from the Thailand flooding that means many…

No Public Funeral for Steve Jobs

While many people have been patiently waiting for the announcement of a public funeral for Steve Jobs, the likelihood of one being scheduled is looking pretty dim.  A report in the wall street journal said that the funeral was being held Friday and was a private affair.  Obviously, this was done to prevent such idiocy as the WBC protests or to prevent masses of people from descending upon the funeral procession.  However, this also would be befitting the man who…

Will Apple re-name Siri for Japan Market?

Notes making the rounds in the blogs today are making light of the fact that Siri, the new iPhone 4S personal assistant’s name is similar sounding to the Japanese word Shiri.  Shiri, or Oshiri in Japanese is rear or bottom and certainly not a word I would believe Apple would want associated with their latest product. A similar incident happened when the iPad was introduced in Japan.  AiPad is an adult diaper brand in Japan and this fact apparently escaped…

CEO Tim Cook at the Apple headquarters in Cupertino, California.   The keynote had been expected to introduce the iPhone 5 and when it became apparent that this was not what was being introduced, Apple’s share price fell as far at 354.24. Bytes From The Apple — A Resurgence of the Apple-1

By Bill Martens When Steve Wozniak first created his Apple-1 computer, it was all hand wire wrapped and on breadboard.  No fancy automated electronic assembly was even thought of.  It was purely a labor and work of true love of the art form.  These hand built machines were mostly produced in early 1976 with the original production machines being produced in April 1976 by Steve Wozniak (http://www.woz.org) and Steve Jobs. The fact that only 175 of the original Apple-1 production…

For more information about the update, you can check…

April 1st not Apple’s Incorporation Date? … So Says Woz

An interesting commentary this morning presents a real argument about April 1st being the 35th Anniversary of Apple, Inc.’s incorporation.   While it is known that the company incorporation was filed in April 1976 and that this month IS in fact  the 35th anniversary of the company, According to Steve “WOZ” Wozniak, April Fools Day (April 1st) is not the date of incorporation. Unfortuntely, this date has been presented by many sources and even several within the Apple community as the…

Well, I plunked down $199 for the Verizon iPhone….here is what I think..

I might be a little late to the game in all this but I never had an iPhone before. Mainly cause I was on verizon and was not going to jump ship to get it. Not after hearing how horrible the network was on AT & T. So my plan was up in February and I said, I am not going to get the iphone now because they were going to come out with iPhone 5 (rumor) and I would…

Best Buy Squashes iPad for Employees Rumor

Nest buy squashed the The initial rumor meant that Best Buy would have been purchasing nearly 200,000 units just for their employees.  This glut of machines would have likely meant very few machines for actual retail customers. According to the article in the Wall Street Journal (http://blogs.wsj.com/digits/2011/03/07/best-buy-considers-tablets-for-salespeople/?mod=WSJBlog&mod=), they are looking into other alternatives and other tablets but it is highly unlikely now that they will ever give iPads to all their employees.
