Well, we finally broke down and upgraded our iPhone 3gS and there are many impressive things about iOS 5 on the iPhone 3gS. Yet, there is something missing. We couldn’t quite place our hand on it but we figured we would break it down piece by piece. While the introduction to iCloud was nice and simple, allowing us at the end to simply not use it if we so desired, it was sort of, shall we say, commanding in the…
The iOS 5 Update for the iPhone and iPad has finally been released and the only thing we could say here was WOW! It is massive and the difference between iOS 4 and 5 is like comparing Apples and oranges. The update ran and re-booted nicely and we were back and running with our 3gS as we await the 4S. Included in the update is the following items: • Notifications ◦ Swipe from the top of any screen to view…

With less than 10 hours to go until the iPhone5 announcement, it is funny to read the hubub on many of the main steam media sites. It seems that many in the main stream, including the Wall Street Journal want the iPhone 5 announcement to be a failure. Videos like “Is the iPhone loosing its cool factor” and “Little Buzz Ahead of Apple’s iPhone Event” being the most popular on the site seems that they are pushing that negative agenda….

Many of you readers may have noticed that I have been rather absent in my postings to the website for the past two weeks. Now, I am back, well shaken, radiated and ready to get this glow in the dark bod back into form here. News events here in Japan have been nothing less than heart breaking and absolutely horrifying. The thought of so much loss of life and damage is beyond the comprehension of the average person, but I…
I volunteer as a system administrator at a place which installs software for an “educational charity” on Fridays. Yesterday the repair guy (who is a big Star Trek fan) called me over to his table. He showed me a video on Youtube about an Android app which turned a tablet into a “Tricorder”. I thought that was pretty cool. A quick search on Google for “lcars ipad” turned up this link to a couple of videos from last year. The…
Nest buy squashed the The initial rumor meant that Best Buy would have been purchasing nearly 200,000 units just for their employees. This glut of machines would have likely meant very few machines for actual retail customers. According to the article in the Wall Street Journal (http://blogs.wsj.com/digits/2011/03/07/best-buy-considers-tablets-for-salespeople/?mod=WSJBlog&mod=), they are looking into other alternatives and other tablets but it is highly unlikely now that they will ever give iPads to all their employees.
The FAA has approved the iPad as a replacement for paper maps in the cockpits of commercial aircraft. Traditionally, airline pilots have carried reams of the maps of the airports they were flying into and out of, in a specialized flight suitcase. Now they will really only need their iPad complete with the appropriate maps application such as the one from Jeppesen. According to an article in Bloomberg (http://bloom.bg/fFwLkH), Delta Airlines is one of the major players in the push…

There is a story running in a Forbes Blog (http://blogs.forbes.com/elizabethwoyke/2011/03/04/is-best-buy-planning-to-give-ipads-to-all-its-sales-associates/) by Elizabeth Woyke that Best Buy is planning on giving all of it’s 180,000 retail employees an iPad to help them become better sales people. If proved true, it could be a huge gamble for the retailer which is struggling as of late, but it could also have a huge payoff since Best Buy is an Apple sales partner. Best Buy may be counting on their employees becoming better educated…
Conan O’Brien has been known for his ability to have the latest and greatest in Apple gadgets and to poke fun at them at the same time. While his iPhone skit was quite funny a while back, his new iPad2 commercial is absolutely brilliant in the manner it parodies the launch. Stating “Apple is getting a bit cocky” in his monologue, he then turns to the following commercial to take the joke home.
Many eons ago, or maybe it just seems like that, a man named Lord British (A.K.A. Richard Garriott) released a software package to the world which forever changed the manner in which computers and games were thought of. That game from so long ago (actually 1978) was Akalabeth, the predecessor to the now famous Ultima series of adventure role playing games. Now, when it seemed safe to emerge from the darkness safe from the threat of attack by an Orc,…
Oliver Goguel, author of the ActiveGS App announced that he was pulling the latest version of his app from the App Store. Version 1.21 had been submitted and was ready to be released when a bug was discovered in the app which would cause the iPad to freeze. The bug was discovered after a beta tester used the zoom lock feature and the entire machine froze. ActiveGS has been used for many years now on the Virtual Apple ][ website…
In obvious preparation for next weeks release of the iPad2, Apple has released the iOS 4.3 Gold Master to its developers. With the new technologies implemented into the new iPad2, Apple is hedging its bets that one week will be enough for most developers to catch up on the Apps and get the new Apps into the App Store prior to the release of the iPad. There are sure to be a ton of new apps utilizing the cameras and…
Apple introduced its new iPad 2 today at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, California by none other than the master presenter himself, Steve Jobs. He mentioned that he could not let this historic announcement go by without showing up at the show, which is interesting because this presentation was a lot less historic than the iPhone coming to Verizon…. in my opinion anyway. Back to the iPad as it were, never owning an iPad myself…
Once again, the rumor mills have been running up all types of conjecture of what folks think the iPad2 will be. I can tell you what it will not be. It will not contain anything from the MacBook Pro other than 1 or two new technologies. Most of it will be rehashes and improvements of current technology. First off, memory has been a major issue on the machines from the get go. I have friends who have the 16gb model…
