The Forty Column site has added a number of newly produced graphics to the site. The site features work by users using the T40 program by Brutal Deluxe (http://www.brutaldeluxe.fr/products/apple2/t40.html). The program allows you to create true old school forty column art. The Forty Column site is the brainchild of Daniel Kruszyna who put the idea of such an editor to Antoine Vignau of Brutal Deluxe. Days later, the new T40 program was ready and is now available to all users. …

Apple today released a couple of updates including iTunes 10.5.1. This update is supposed to include the new service from Apple called iTunes Match, their matching service which allows imported CDs to also be stored in iCloud. This service should address many users issues with the lack of cover art and proper titling of their CD’s and seeks to eliminate many of the gaps in most people’s cover flows. iTunes 10.5 also included:• iTunes in the Cloud. iTunes now stores…
The November 2011 episode of Open Apple, the only co-hosted Apple II podcast, is now available! This month, Mike and I talk with Melissa Barron, the Apple II community’s famed tapestry artist. We three relate their experiences exploring the past and future of computer media at conventions and museums in Chicago and Rochester, exploring the methods used to create and preserve history. Further tributes are made to Steve Jobs, while Mike Westerfield reclassifies old BASIC tools and releases new ones….
By Mike Pfaiffer My topic for thought this time is something in Canada which has even made its way to some American media. Our ISPs have been given permission to implement Usage Based Billing (UBB). The way our ISPs currently bill their customers is based on speed. In Winnipeg the two major ISPs are Shaw (cable) and MTS (DSL). Through out Canada we have three more large ISPs. All charge based on speed. Certain ISPs like MTS have set things…
By Mark Phosis Philip Lord was looking for a basic listing of Tetris in a recent post on Comp.Sys.Apple2 and this was the program listing by Mark Phosis. The program was written in 1992 and could definitely be optimized to run faster. The drawing primitives are at lines 200 and 225. It looks like the subroutine at line 800 does collision detection. ============ 10 GOSUB 1000 100 W = W + 1: IF W > LV THEN W = 0:…
by Wade Clarke This is my ‘new’ (IE previously unreleased anyplace) version of Super Star Trek for the Apple II Time to share another old game of mine with folks in the internet age 🙂 You can download the disk image here: http://home.iprimus.com.au/bloomer/STARTREK.zip In 1995 I put together this version of ye olde ‘Super Star Trek’ game, using pseudo-animated mousetext graphics and some nice sound effects. The interface is also friendly, you just tap a key to do most things….

Title: Oregon Trail Publisher: Gameloft Cost: $1.99 Platform: iPhone Back when I was in junior high school, we had a very rudimentary version of the game Oregon Trail on our DEC PDP 11/40. Playing the game was as simple as making the right choices and typing BANG for the hunting scenes in the game. While very entertaining at the time, it was rather simplistic compared to the 1984 version of the MECC game Oregon Trail. The 1984 Version was a…
By A.P.P.L.E. Staff This month, the gang over at MacHeist has had two events. The first was ta short event to give away the software package Squeeze by LateNiteSoft. While this particular package would appeal to those who are lacking in hard drive space, we feel that squeezing data is not necessarily the best idea. However, now the folks at MacHeist have come out with the nanoBundle 2 and have included some really cool packages. The packages included in the…
This issue I’d like to whine and complain about proprietary versus open standards. In the past I’ve generally come out against proprietary software and standards. I will do so again today. The motivation behind my current rant is the admittedly cheap MP3 player I bought last month. It is a 2 GB Sylvania SMPK2083 made in China by Curtis International. My primary purpose was to use it as a voice recorder for my notes. It does so remarkably well. The…
This month, I finally joined the rest of the world in the mad dash for the iPhone which everyone else partook in last year. This lateness to the party was no fault of my own other than the fact that I was stuck in a phone contract that was two years long. My contract began three weeks before the iPhone came out and actually ran through June of this year. While this type of contract is not unusual, it has…
The Virtual Apple ][ website has been upgraded to allow emulation on all platforms for their Apple ][ section. The emulation site which is popular among educators for their games and ease of use in the classroom has long been criticized for their support of only Windows based platforms. That has all changed thanks to the efforts of Marc Ressl and Nick Westgate. Using a modified version of Marc’s AppleIIGo emulator, the new Virtual Apple ][ website now runs on…
By A.P.P.L.E. Staff Photos By Jim Gottlieb One again, the even aptly named MacWorld Exposition has come and gone. While the naysayers were saying that the event would die without the main players there, the event did go on. Apple, Inc. of course pulled out over a year ago, prior to the last version of the event. But Alas, the show must go on and go on it did. What you saw this year was that instead of many big…
Man oh man what a time. You know how things come and go in cycles… This is one of those times. Lots of little things piled up… My cousin was appointed as ambassador for Le Festival du Voyageur (a major local mid-winter party in French similar to Mardi Gras). Congratulations Roger! I may have mentioned this one earlier. My new quad-core PC had a hard drive failure. It’s a good thing I backed up everything before it stopped functioning. I…
