Tetris in Applesoft

By Mark Phosis Philip Lord was looking for a basic listing of Tetris in a recent post on Comp.Sys.Apple2 and this was the program listing by Mark Phosis.  The program was written in 1992 and could definitely be optimized to run faster. The drawing primitives are at lines 200 and 225.  It looks like the subroutine at line 800 does collision detection. ============ 10  GOSUB 1000 100 W = W + 1: IF W > LV THEN W =  0:…

Oregon Trail for the iPhone

Title: Oregon Trail Publisher: Gameloft Cost: $1.99 Platform: iPhone Back when I was in junior high school, we had a very rudimentary version of the game Oregon Trail on our DEC PDP 11/40.  Playing the game was as simple as making the right choices and typing BANG for the hunting scenes in the game.   While very entertaining at the time, it was rather simplistic compared to the 1984 version of the MECC game Oregon Trail. The 1984 Version was a…

MacHeist NanoBundle 2

By A.P.P.L.E. Staff This month, the gang over at MacHeist has had two events.  The first was ta short event to give away the software package Squeeze by LateNiteSoft.  While this particular package would appeal to those who are lacking in hard drive space, we feel that squeezing data is not necessarily the best idea. However, now the folks at MacHeist have come out with the nanoBundle 2 and have included some really cool packages.  The packages included in the…

Mike’s editorial

This issue I’d like to whine and complain about proprietary versus open standards. In the past I’ve generally come out against proprietary software and standards. I will do so again today. The motivation behind my current rant is the admittedly cheap MP3 player I bought last month. It is a 2 GB Sylvania SMPK2083 made in China by Curtis International. My primary purpose was to use it as a voice recorder for my notes. It does so remarkably well. The…

The Editor Still Bytes Back

This month, I finally joined the rest of the world in the mad dash for the iPhone which everyone else partook in last year.  This lateness to the party was no fault of my own other than the fact that I was stuck in a phone contract that was two years long. My contract began three weeks before the iPhone came out and actually ran through June of this year.  While this type of contract is not unusual, it has…

Virtual Apple ][ Website Updated

The Virtual Apple ][ website has been upgraded to allow emulation on all platforms for their Apple ][ section.  The emulation site which is popular among educators for their games and ease of use in the classroom has long been criticized for their support of only Windows based platforms. That has all changed thanks to the efforts of Marc Ressl and Nick Westgate.   Using a modified version of Marc’s AppleIIGo emulator, the new Virtual Apple ][ website now runs on…

MacWorld Expo 2010 Through Photos

By A.P.P.L.E. Staff Photos By Jim Gottlieb One again, the even aptly named MacWorld Exposition has come and gone.   While the naysayers were saying that the event would die without the main players there, the event did go on.  Apple, Inc. of course pulled out over a year ago, prior to the last version of the event.  But Alas, the show must go on and go on it did. What you saw this year was that instead of many big…

Mike’s Editorial — A Variety of Items

Man oh man what a time. You know how things come and go in cycles… This is one of those times. Lots of little things piled up… My cousin was appointed as ambassador for Le Festival du Voyageur (a major local mid-winter party in French similar to Mardi Gras). Congratulations Roger! I may have mentioned this one earlier. My new quad-core PC had a hard drive failure. It’s a good thing I backed up everything before it stopped functioning. I…

The Apple World

The following letter appeared in the Michigan Apple-Gram as well as the International Apple Core produced Apple Orchard volume 1 number 1. While the idea behind it was unbelievable at the time, history had a way of making it work. We hope that you enjoy this little bit of history as much as we did. Vintage Micros Auctions Rare Apple Lisa 1

On the 20th of June 2002, Vintage Micros.com of South Carolina listed one of the rarest computers available today. The Lisa 1 was only produced for a few months and then replaced with the Lisa 2, which was eventually renamed to the Macintosh XL due to the problems with the Lisa 1.
