Apple today released a couple of updates including iTunes 10.5.1.  This update is supposed to include the new service from Apple  called iTunes Match, their matching service which allows imported CDs to also be stored in iCloud.  This service should address many users issues with the lack of cover art and proper titling of their CD’s and seeks to eliminate many of the gaps in most people’s cover flows. iTunes 10.5 also included:• iTunes in the Cloud. iTunes now stores…

iOS 5.0.1 Update, with a few items for 5.0.2

In a week that saw many users receive their iPhone 4S including myself, Apple decided to go on a tear and create a few PR issues with developers.  However, I guess the end result of that disaster in the Internet world is that Apple decided to fix one Charlie Miller’s well known and thoroughly explained bug (@0xcharlie) after unceremoniously booting him from the Apple Developers program.  They took this bug and a nasty battery drain on the iPhone 4S and…

Comparison of iPhone’s Cameras

The folks who produce the iPhone App Camera+ (http://www.campl.us) have put a very nice comparison of the different iPhone cameras online.  The comparison which starts with the original iPhone and ends with the iPhone 4S and two professional Canon Cameras, shows the distinct differences of each camera.  The iPhone 4S does very well in the comparison showing some of the crispness that the new camera is supposed to have. You can check out the comparison at http://campl.us/posts/iPhone-Camera-Comparison

Updating the iPad 2 to iOS 5

With the release of iOS 5 this week by Apple, most of the iPhone users in the world were faced with the possibility of getting the update fairly immediately.  Unfortunately, my iPad 2 did not see the update until yesterday.   With a bit of trepidation, I went ahead and took the plunge.  Yes, both feet in and updated. While my iPhone 3gS had updated to iOS 5 smoothly, the download for the iPad 2 seemed to drag on forever in…

rsync

This is a command coming from the *NIX world I found to be useful for maintaining a backup for important software. It works either on a single computer or with two computers. The details can be found in the man page for the command. I’d like to thank Mike Doob from the MUUG for reminding me about this command. The simplest way to use the command is “rsync <file list or directory 1> <file list or directory 2>”. All it…

The Editor Bytes Back – Reasons to update to a iPhone 4S

Well, we finally broke down and upgraded our iPhone 3gS and there are many impressive things about iOS 5 on the iPhone 3gS.  Yet, there is something missing.  We couldn’t quite place our hand on it but we figured we would break it down piece by piece. While the introduction to iCloud was nice and simple, allowing us at the end to simply not use it if we so desired, it was sort of, shall we say, commanding in the…

Handbrake: A review

Happy Canadian Thanksgiving everybody. This review will be just a quick one. I’m not an expert with this sort of thing and have only dabbled with it from time to time… What is it? Handbrake is simply a transcoder. It converts DVD’s to video files and video files from one format to another. Does it work? Yes. It does what it was designed to do quite well and actually is fairly stable in spite of having not been updated in…

Apple Pre-Orders for iPhone 4S “Best Ever”

Apple, Inc. began taking pre-orders for their latest incarnation of the iPhone, the iPhone 4S.  While many speculated that the pre-ordering was done because of the hohum attitude about the new device, sales of the new phone have been more than satisfying to the companies selling the device. A few early morning issues with server availability caused some frustration among buyers, yet AT&T reported that their systems had taken over 200,000 orders for the new phone in the first 12…

Will Apple re-name Siri for Japan Market?

Notes making the rounds in the blogs today are making light of the fact that Siri, the new iPhone 4S personal assistant’s name is similar sounding to the Japanese word Shiri.  Shiri, or Oshiri in Japanese is rear or bottom and certainly not a word I would believe Apple would want associated with their latest product. A similar incident happened when the iPad was introduced in Japan.  AiPad is an adult diaper brand in Japan and this fact apparently escaped…
