Apple Releases New iPad Commercial

In response to Microsoft’s release of their new “Surface” tablet, Apple has done exactly what one would expect they would do in lieu of a new product release.  Release a commercial. The new commercial entitled “Do it all”, highlights the capabilities of the iPad and takes a swipe at the Microsoft product without mentioning it by focusing squarely on the high density retina display.

New record for the Apple-I Computer — $374,500 USD

Sotheby’s Auction House sold an Apple-I Computer this week for the staggering price of $374,500 USD.  The hammer price of this auction more than crushed the previous record of approximately $210,000 USD for an Apple-I. The Apple-I computer was created in 1976 by Steve Wozniak and was the first machine sold by Apple, Inc.  While the machine was really just a board, many hobbyists were able to assemble the machine into a working machine with just a few parts and…

The MacBook Pro Next Gen First Looks

Early this morning, I was joined by about 50 people in front of the Tokyo Apple Store.  All of those in line were hoping that there were still machines in stock, but just as the doors appeared to open, a staffer walked out and boldly announced that while there were display models of the new machine, no actual for sale items were available. Funnily, I needed to go to the store to have an iPhone repaired but figured I would…

Apple gives us a Unicorn!

As we were chatting away in IRC pre-WWDC Keynote, I mentioned that I would like to see a new MBP with Flash and dual SSD.   Now that I look on that configuration, I had it all wrong but then that was before the keynote.  Tim Cook and his merry men brought us all to our knees again with the new offerings from Cupertino. It seemed quite funny at the time but one person mentioned that a MacBook Pro with Flash…

DIY antenna for TV tuner cards and new generation TVs

A couple of months ago I posted an article about a “home made” antenna I made from plans on the internet. A couple of days ago I completed an antenna with a different design I also found on the internet. Last night I held a demo of it for some friends (including a couple of retired TV/RADAR/HAM professionals. They were fairly impressed with the results and sensitivity. Considering the darned thing was made of wood and mostly wire coat hangers…

The Northern Spy — Market Drivers

The Spy observes with each passing month that business and the economy seem driven, not by stereotypical hard-nosed logic surrounding bottom line considerations, but by inertia, emotion, and untrammeled greed. This applies to individual enterprises, industry sectors, and whole economies, and is reflected in actual success, stock and bond evaluations, and exchange rates (proxy instruments along with bonds for the equity of nations). Indeed, in the current environment, rhetoric around social agendas or even the general good, sound increasingly hollow,…

Cinnamon (a Gnome 3 fork) and MATE (a Gnome 2 fork). I have installed the 64 bit RC of Cinnamon…

SATA tip:

Regular readers will know I’m into DIY and fixing things. Lately my Linux PC has been having some hardware problems (which is why people haven’t been seeing a lot of regular posts from me lately). It’s been going on for some time in fact. I’ve checked out a lot of potential hardware issues and ended up replacing most of the computer at one point or another. One thing I haven’t checked out is the SATA cables. Last Friday I borrowed…

The Northern Spy — Of Tools and their Wielders

The Spy’s tools provide this month’s entertainment, both for his consistency and their diversity. You see, his two sons recently had their birthdays, and predictably, they got tools. After all the well-equipped householder needs his drills, saws, screwdrivers, hammers, power strips, sockets, the box to organize it all, a good work bench and proper ladders. Now, no matter that one is a software engineer, and the other a high school math and history teacher–how else can they get jobs done…
