These videos somehow got overlooked by us when we were talking about new software this fall. The video editing system Final Cut Pro is a highly intricate piece of software that takes a good number hours of usage to master, yet now there is a shortcut of sorts now. Apple released a number of free videos about using the program this past year and they are available on the Apple website at: http://support.apple.com/videos/#finalcutpro While they are not a full support…

Posted by Mike Maginnis on CSA2: The latest episode of Open Apple, the monthly Apple II podcast has been been released. This time Ken and Mike chat with IIGS programmer Kelvin Sherlock about GShisen, his favorite programming languages, eBay finds, Apple II news and everything else we could think of. Find us on iTunes (and give us a review or a rating if you have a minutes) or stop by http://open-apple.net to download the MP3. Feedback is always welcome and…
Apple’s stock went on an almost immediate nose dive this morning immediately following the Keynote speech by Apple, Inc. CEO Tim Cook at the Apple headquarters in Cupertino, California. The keynote had been expected to introduce the iPhone 5 and when it became apparent that this was not what was being introduced, Apple’s share price fell as far at 354.24. Apple also did nothing to help this free fall when it seemed to many users in the social media world…
This morning, Apple introduced the iPhone 4S. While much of the media had been expecting the iPhone 5, the iPhone 4S was introduced including such capabilities as 8 Megapixel Camera, 1080P HD Video and Voice Control. The Siri application which was introduced a couple of years ago, with Apple, Inc. buying the company last year, is now totally integrated into the iOS and allows the user to control the phone completely hands free. On a more comical side, many folks…
Apple has shut down their Store (http://store.apple.com) in preparation for the upcoming announcements of new products. We can only assume that the new product is the iPhone 5 as that is what Apple has told us that today’s event is about. Any other goodies they decide to add will just be icing on the cake. This shut down has become commonplace with each event Apple has held in the past several years and thus is no real surprise.
With less than 10 hours to go until the iPhone5 announcement, it is funny to read the hubub on many of the main steam media sites. It seems that many in the main stream, including the Wall Street Journal want the iPhone 5 announcement to be a failure. Videos like “Is the iPhone loosing its cool factor” and “Little Buzz Ahead of Apple’s iPhone Event” being the most popular on the site seems that they are pushing that negative agenda….
by Rick Sutcliffe Technology News and Views Since 1983 R.I.P. … October 2011 Hewlett Packard appears to have taken comments made here last month seriously enough to take defensive measures. But let’s be realistic. First, changing CEOs at this juncture (nearly 50% share value lost) is like tossing a single sandbag into the raging torrent pouring through a broken dyke. Second, hiring Goldman Sachs Group to plan a takeover prevention strategy is a whistling in the wind….
A few minutes ago I downloaded and tried out a free music player called aTunes. They had a version update to 2.1.0. My impression is it is a good try. There are a couple of features which iTunes doesn’t have but (on the Mac at least) the interface is a little clunky. For the moment Apple doesn’t have much to worry about. However I can see where this project is going so it may be worth considering in the future….
A press release this morning from the KansasFest organization announces that John Romero, whose programming legacy is set over 97 titles, will be the keynote speaker at the 2012 Kansasfest. The event which will run July 17 to July 22, 2012 is the annual gathering of Apple ][ enthusiasts, hobbyists, hackers and others. Each year the event draws about 50 people and is always high spirited and full of computing surprises. For more on this event, we include the press…
Apple, Inc. has sent out invitations to the media for the upcoming October 4th announcement of their latest rendition of the iPhone. The iPhone 5 as it has been dubbed in most circles is expected to be much sleeker, faster and have more battery life according to reports around the web. There is also a rumor that the new iPhone will be voice controlled. This rumor does not seem too far fetched since most of the software has been available…
An announcement from Ken Gagne of the Kansas Fest committee on CSA2 Specifies the 2012 rendition of KFEST. “KansasFest 2012 will be held at Rockhurst University in Kansas City, Missouri, from Tuesday, July 17, through Sunday, July 22. Note that these dates do NOT conflict with Comic-Con… they finally realized the juggernaut they were up against and moved their event! :- D So any geeks interest in both events can have their cake and eat it, too. More details will…
The short response is don’t. The long response is it can be done but… It is very painful to get the TV to work as a monitor. The resoluton of a 720p TV is supposed to be 1200 x 720 (or fairly close). The aspect is 16:9. Unfortunately up to this point I’ve only been able to get 1024 x 768, which is an aspect of 4:3. To get there I first wasted a couple of hours fiddling around with…
Yesterday I saw a demo of a program called “Mouse Locator”. Surprisingly enough it lives up to its name. That’s always a big plus as far as I am concerned. This small utility puts a larger graphic around the mouse when it is moved. There are a number of preferences available. The first is the idle time (called the trigger time). This is how long the mouse has to remain inactive before moving it starts the graphic. The second is…

From Eric Shepherd’s post on CSA2: I’ve released my first all-new project in years! Trasher is a new extension for the Apple IIgs that adds support for using Command- Delete on your keyboard to delete the selected icons in the Finder. In addition, if you have SideClick installed, you get “Move to Trash” and “Empty Trash” contextual menu items as appropriate! The funny story behind Trasher is that I actually started working on this project back in 1994, but was…
Steve jobs has announced his retirement from Apple, Inc.. He will remain at the company as the Chairman of the board, however, Tim Cook will take over as the CEO. Although the announcement timing may have come as a surprise to many folks, the succession plan has been questioned for the past several years and thus really is not all that big of surprise. Steve’s Resignation Letter: CUPERTINO, Calif.—(BUSINESS WIRE)— To the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community:…
Like most people I hate being told how to spend any of my limited money. Especially in this economy. It seems every time Apple releases a major upgrade to their operating system a bunch of older computers are no longer supported. Readers will recall I have a G4 Server in excellent condition. Granted I had to replace the CD drive with a DVD drive, but that was the only hardware change I had to make. In order to get the…
